Fermanagh versus Down on RTE and BBC??

No disrespect to Down and Fermanagh supporters but could RTE and BBC have a little co-ordination and not show the same game on both channels. Seems a little ridiculous to me. It's just a stupid token gesture (by RTE) early in the season to keep the Northies happy.

Bad enough giving the Late late gig to smug Tubridy but this just goes too far.

Eh not everyone in Ireland has the BBC.

Yes, and not everyone in the north has RTE. BBC are specifically covering the Ulster Championship, which you would expect them to do. For those of us that have both channels, it means we can see it and have a choice of which channel to watch it on, which is a far better scenario than having it on the likes of Sky Sports. Would you prefer the situation, like we had for the Munster v Leinster rugby match a couple of weeks ago, where it was only on one channel that many people didn't have access to, and those that did were being ripped off in order to do so? The fact that we can see today's match on two channels is a great thing. Long may it continue.

good arguments but i still disagree. Firstly since there is more than one championship game on at 3pm today. Could RTE not cover the other game? The main audience for this game will be in ulster so BBC are totally correct to show the game. I just think that at this early stage of the championship, it a good opportunity for RTE to televise a game involving one of the smaller counties.

The rugby argrument doesn't stand since it's a professional sport which needs a steady income to support the league so they are totally within their rights to sale to the highest bidder. And let's be honest, last week's game wasn't of national interest, it was basically Donnybrook versus Limerick.

I never suggested that GAA games should be sold to Sky sports or one of the other pay TV channels and i appreciate the fact that we can watch the games for a small(ish) TV license fee but would just like to see a bit of variety. A little choice. A little spice and all that...

Ha you might want to do a bit of research before posting that.

RTÉ are chasing ratings and want a 'big' game to kick start their season, Ulster where it is at atm.

That Donnybrook statement is not meant to be literal, it's more general, if not a little exaggerated

IMO I think they prob should have televised the Carlow and Louth game, I'm sure RTE would have known BBC would be showing the Ulster game. Not too bad a game btw.

Broadcasting is not about giving viewers more choice, it's about getting as many viewers as possible. For people with both RTE and BBC, the vast majority would watch the match on RTE. RTE know that, so they've no problem broadcasting the same match as BBC. If they showed the other game, while they'd gain the good will of those counties, they'd be needlessly throwing away 10,000s of viewers, because, as much as you wouldn't like to admit it, that's not the match the neutrals want to see.

It's all well and good to say they should give us more choice, but that's not RTE's job. I mean, 10 days from now, RTE, ITV and Sky Sports will all be showing the Champions League final. Do you honestly think 1 of those 3 should broadcast some other match at the same time to give viewers more choice? Obviously the difference of standard is much more vast in that scenario, but the basic principal remains the same.

On a different note, I went to the Munster/Leinster match a few weeks ago with a cousin of mine. I travelled from Waterford to support Munster, not Limerick, and he came from Kilkenny to support Leinster, not Donnybrook. Just thought I should mention that.

I agree with your argument in regards soccer and rugby but i think a different approach should be taken in regards GAA. I know that in Australia efforts are made to televise AFL games involving smaller teams. Although they do have to pay to watch their teams.

I do realise that RTE is a commercial company with commitments to it's shareholders etc etc but maybe the first round of the championship is a good opportunity to show a game involving the smaller counties. After all, we (Louth) might not even make it to the second round

I have explained the Donnybrook statement above. It's non-specific. I'm aware there are Munster fans outside Limerick, It actually feels like most of them are living in Ballsbridge.

Such a bad game of football. When will players realise that you can't tackle the man from behind. You can only tackle the ball or shoulder the opposing player. Fermanagh are a poor team and Down - less said the better. Hard to believe Down played those two games against Tyrone last year.

I can't blame RTÉ for not showing the Carlow/Louth game on TV, although it really should have been streamed live - they seemed to do a lot more of that last year. Louth v Laois won't be on RTÉ or TV3, but the winner's match against Kildare/Offaly/Wexford will be on RTÉ.ie as a web-only event.

Thats Ulster football for ya. Stop the player at all costs.

Ah now we are getting to the nub of your argument. You are upset that the Louth match wasn't on TV. Fair enough, but outside of Louth and Carlow the Ulster match is a bigger game. Plenty of GAA followers do not have the BBC so what game they are showing really should be of little concern. Also in terms of starting the championship coverage with on a high note than RTE would have to choose the higher profile match.

Congrats on the win though! Look forward to seeing the highlights this evening.
