Carbon Frame (Crack) - Replacement Query

Hi. There is a crack in my carbon frame, and I need to get it replaced asap.

I want to know, what is the usual turnaround time for a bike shop ordering a frame (if they dont have it in stock).

Also if a shop does have a frame in stock, is it as simple as swapping over seat post, groupset, wheelset, brakes, handlebars.

This is sort of urgent for me due to (1) heading to Kerry next Thursday for a weks cycling and (2) Wicklow 200 week after that.

For both of these I need a bike, but obviously need the bike by next Thursday.

If this is not possible, where is it possible to hire a reasonably good road bike.

sucks to hear about the frame mate, my LBS can usually get parts in stock from suppliers generally in a few working days.

TBH about renting a road bike will cost a fortune, i inquired about renting one for my mate who was doing a 5 day charity ride and the owner said basically over 5 days you would have the bikepaid for by the end of it.

That's my big worry. Thanks for that.

would the store that you purchased your bike from not give you a loaner for a while ?

If 57 is good for you i can give you the Beone for the WW200, its not the best bike out there but it will get through it quite ok :)

How'd you crack it do you know -can you get it replaced under warranty?

Replacing bits from one frame to another should only take an hour or two -give me a shout if you need a hand, have done it before. Also, you are welcome to use my Focus if you can't get our bike sorted in time :)

I will ask them thanks. Hopefully I will get sorted.

@Astra: Thank you very much for the offer, but it would be too big for me. I really appreciate the genorosity however.

@ Tiny: car accident last week. Crack is in the top tube, roughly where the car hit me. Owner has been excellent about it. He admitted liab and has no problem with me claiming on his insurance. So I am hoping to get same frame, and just swap all the bits over. He just wants to get it over with asap, and so do I.

Also, thanks for the offer of the Focus. Appreciated.
I know that 2 stores stock the frames, but I dont know do they have them in stock.

Crack is small, but am worried that it will get bigger, and thus if I ride the bike, I would probably invalidate the warranty.

Wow, there's a nice community here willing to offer help:)

Don't think I'll ever be serious enough to consider a full carbon frame but if you spend a couple of grand on one and it cracks through damage or is otherwise out of warranty presumably you're fooked? Can you get insurance to cover such an expensive item?

If it's an insurance claim, I would just get a whole new bike. If you were hit hard enough to crack the frame, there could be damage to the wheels etc, and I suspect the insurance company would be only to happy to replace the bike if there's no personal injury claim. I'm not trying to advocate insurance fraud at all, but if the frame's cracked, the bike's essentially a write off, and yo should just replace the whole thing.

    (or get an Orca!)

If you're a member of Cycling Ireland your bike's insured up to a value of €7500 AFAIR

+1 on getting a full bike btw.

EDIT: sorry - I think if you're a member of cycling ireland you have the option of taking out insurance for a very reasonable rate to cover theft or damage (in competition or otherwise). maybe someone else can confirm this?

The insurance from cycle ireland will cover bikes up to €10,000. So Carbon fibre bikes are covered. But the payout is on the market value of the bike not new for old. You can also get cover for damage during races.

Beware the policy runs from Jan 1st to Dec 31st. So buying now costs full price but only covers half the year.

Yeah +1 on this too. Was talking to a guy last week from belfast sho got his bike replaced under insurance. The insurance company and the bike shop said that when a frame is cracked with sufficient force then there's a chance the integrity of some of the other components may have been compromised as well. The cost of testing those components will outweigh the cost of the insurance company paying you out. Now in this guys case the insurance company wrote him a cheque for the entire retail RRP meaning he could find it himself and buy what ever he wanted.... He had a trek and for some reason bought the same again.

ROK, I'd try and get the full replacement after seeing the guy's pics from the TOI I wouldn't risk a compromised seat post.

The cycling ireland insurance covers all the bikes you own for a cost of €120 per calendar year. I got it and thinks its a great deal...

No other insurance company would insure my bike away form home for more than €1,700. If your in he mod for a laugh ring Quinn Direct an ask to insure you bike. Tell them its worth €2,500 and they'l ask you if your sure its not a motorbike.

FBD are covering my 3000 euro valued Big Dummy without any questions for about 30 euro. It's true though that the CI insurance is the only one that covers racing but that's a moot point for me.

Thats cool -- I couldn't get unattended bike insurance meaning if it was stolen locked outside a pub I was buggered. Mind you I wouldn't do that anyway :)

    Tkks folks.

All sorted (hopefully). Found exact same frame and size. Going with that.
Guy will check all components first to make sure theay are ok.

The guy who crashed into me has been very helpful to be honest. He is instructing his insurance company to pay out.

However, I am presuming that I should keep the damaged frame as evidence?
Also, has anyone else claimed for a bike off of another persons insurance (ie when you were victim of accident). Are insurance co's easy to deal with or do they stall.
I mean I had to fork out for a new bike today, and wouldn't mind knowing how long I will be waiting for reimbursement.

Was in a similar(ish) situ last October -was in a car with bikes on the back and someone ran into the back of us. Have to be honest and say FBD (yer mans insurance) were great to deal with. Accident on the Saturday, FBD called me about 9.30 on the Monday morning, asked me what the bike was worth, I said 600, they asked were there any upgrades, I said yes, a saddle, bars etc, they said would 750 cover it, I said grand, and the cheque was in the post the next day.

Took me a little while to get it cos they mucked up the address (was a complicated claim), but once there was no personal injury claim, they were happy to pay up I reckon.

Hope you get sorted and back on the road asap!
