I believe that Europe's larger countries are entitled to automatic entry regardless of their performance in the previous year.

They will always get through...along with France, Germany and a few more. They pay the most money in to it or something.

i dont understand the rules and the whole voting system as they are now . Like Irelands entry , bar 4 or 5 others , was as good as any of tonights entry's and the way I see it ,the newer EEU / Eastern block countries ie, Abainia ,Slovinia ,moldova etc should be the countries looking to join the Elite , who have being there in the competition for 50 odd years .

I dont like the semi final rule and much prefer the old system of entry / voting .

Probably, but apparently the Eurovision just would not happen without the financial contributions from UK, Germany, France & Spain. (Known as "The Big Four")

The United Kingdom along with 3 other countries have automatic entry as they pay the EBU for the Eurovision

It surprisingly came fifth (possibly the Europeans are being nice this year to prevent 1/4 of their Eurovision money being withdrawn).

"England" has never been in the Eurovision.

Why is it that Russia and Israel are in the contest when they are really part of Asia? Because they pay a lot of money to the Eurovision committee to take part and run the contest each year. Eurovision is really quite corrupt. Luckily it's jsut a bit of fun, eh?

It's so unfair that England are allowed enter but Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland can't. Next year they should be forced to enter as the United Kingdom.

why is azerbaijan and russia and armenia in EUROvision?

Because they are members of the European Broadcasting Union, which is not exclusively for countries actually in Europe or the EU

why is azerbaijan and russia and armenia in EUROvision?

They are part of UEFA too. Burn them all. Rabble rabble.

why is azerbaijan and russia and armenia in EUROvision?

Russia straddles both Asia and Europe. West of the Ural Mountains = Europe Everything east of them = Asia

    So Moscow is in Europe.

So how does israel get in? They obviously pay into the EBU fund but who, day 1, decided that they could join in and on what grounds?
As the map above shows, jordan, lebanon and syria are closer to europe and would have as much right to join?

The European Broadcasting Union is open for full membership to all European member states, as well as those nations near Europe in North Africa and the Middle East, who fall within the "European Broadcasting area". The purpose is to share technology, resources and all sorts of other utopian hippy crap, but primarily , it's to split the bill for things like this and the Olympics etc.

"The "European Broadcasting Area" is bounded on the west by the western boundary of Region 1, on the east by the meridian 40° East of Greenwich and on the south by the parallel 30° North (Through North Africa) so as to include the western part of the USSR, the northern part of Saudi Arabia and that part of those countries bordering the Mediterranean within these limits. In addition, Iraq, Jordan and that part of the territory of Turkey lying outside the above limits are included in the European Broadcasting Area."

Lebanon has submitted an entry in the past, but withdrew before the night of the contest (on political grounds) as did Tunisia. Morocco has entered (and actually turned up to sing) in previous years too.
You should be warned that Liechtenstein and Qatar are planning to storm the pop charts with their winning entries in the coming years.

Basically Anyone in the region who coughs up the membership fee to the EBU can have an ould sing.

    Thanks LB.
Slightly off topic but is a similar reason as to why israel can compete in UEFA competitions?

If you think that's the only mockery about the Eurovision you obviously don't live in the real world

It is cheap entertainment that goes on for hours in prime time. Who gives a damn if the UK, France, Spain and Germany get through automatically.

Who gives a damn about the Eurovision anymore, full stop. The only time I ever watched it was the time Lordi won, just to witness the metaphorical boot up the hole they gave the entire Eurovision machine.

They should bring back the old system of using judges to determine the votes. Though they won't make as much money out of that, will they? All those SMS fees they're taking...

Are Spain out of it for good now? The UK should pull out next

First time i agreed with a win on that flipping show in years
Norway well deserved at last.Albania lovely song shame so much animosity in voting. And Ireland's taste in voting really baffles me,i am sure the judge votes are out weighing the public votes,Irish have better ears for music than that.England oh my god what typical rubbish lol i couldn't even sit through the whole song.:D
Its all about who is kissing whos ass.I loved how our presenter had it down to t who was gonna vote who what 1233_hand_clapping.gif lol

Do Irish people even really vote anymore? lol
