    hi,

just wondering if its possible to purchase a device to read the fault codes from the computer? or even if there is some backdoor method? I have a feeling i have a problem with the camshaft sensor based on the same symptoms from other owners but i dont want to replace the part unless im sure its the cause of the problem.

Yes it is possible to purchase a obd reader for a E46, you look on e bay.
your car may have 2 obd scokets depending on the year of your car. The 16 pin one is located above the pedals inside, and there may be a round one under the bonnet on the drivers side near the brake fluid reservoir.
