My da is looking to get a broadband in his house, he lives in the sticks and doesn't have a phoneline in and he doesn't want to have to get one in either.

So just basically looking for a bit of advice which of the mobile broadbands would give him the best service. Any help much appreciated!

If he wants mobile broadband from Meteor, 3, Vodafone or O2 etc and is living in the sticks then he probably won't get great reception but it depends where he is.

You should post his location to see if anyone near him uses mobile broadband and what the signal is like.

"The sticks" simply isn't enough information, but it does significantly degrade the probability of a decent service. Mobile broadband is NOT broadband, and don't be under any illusions that it is. Which one will work best? No one can answer that question with any degree of certainty, you'll only know by trying each one.

Fixed wireless, cable or DSL are the only proper broadband, and ruling out a phone line is a mistake if he wants an any way decent service.

Have 3 mobile broadband, co. galway area
Fine for general web surfing, but you wouldn't use it for any serious downloading of music or movies...

Well he lives in Donore, Co Meath. The main use of it will be for the kids using it on Ps3 or xbox to go online... He has chorus in and was looking at getting the chorus/ntl broadband in but he isn't sure if he would need a phoneline for it???

Would the likes of digiweb or clearwire be any use to him???

Mobile is pretty much a no-no for PS3 and Xbox, don't even consider it. It may work sometimes, but the latency is generally too poor for a decent gaming experience. Same applies to Clearwire.

If UPC broadband is available then he should get that.

    Hi Gaz

Net1 are available in Donore Co Meath and they don't require a phone line. They put an antenna on your roof and they feed this into your computer in whatever room you want. Their website is www.net1.ie.

Get a Fixed Wireless service. Not Mobile. Mobile is not Broadband.
