i saw this and was wondering is it only to reduce drag? or is there some other, cleverer reason?

Ah here now... thats a low blow. This was a very ugly moment in the sport.
If ye look at the pic properly you will see that he has just been shot with a rubber bullet from the sharp shooter on the back of the motor bike. They are the Euro Police, and the Itialian branch really are the worst type... Bertolini was told that the black footwear would not be allowed but he flaunted the rules and paid the price... The Austrian branch are more lax though, you will however get shouted at for wearing grey socks by your peers......

who wants to live in a world where the euro police sit idly by while some ragamuffin wears black shoes... it doesnt bear contemplating

Black overshoes are well within the rules :)

In an effort to reduce weight, he removed all non essential items and now uses his knees as brake pads.

Anyone watch his descent? It was somewhere between amazing and madness. As Bill Hicks said, he must need a wheelbarrow to carry his balls!

Does the fact that he has most of his weight on his front wheel effect the speed of his descent in any way? If so why?

I think it was more for aerodynamic reasons (reduce the frontal area). I guess

Either he's just hit the brakes (really hard) or he's scratching his arse!
