    My brother in law is looking for a diesel SUV but I'm trying to talk him into a petrol Forester so he is keen to know what the extra cost of petrol would be over the year based on a 10c price difference between the 2.

    He estimates the diesel to do 43mpg and I think the Forester averages 28mpg.
    He does approx. 12,000miles/year

    Any idea on how to calculate this?

    At those figures, the diesel will use 279 gals, as opposed to 429 for the Forester. That's 150 gals, i'd say about €650 extra?

    He will spare a couple of hundred a year on diesel.

    Be careful because that looks like a US site. US gallons are different to UK gallons so the mpgs will be used incorrectly.

    1 gallon = 4.55 litres
    Diesel = €1.01/litre
    Petrol = €1.11/litre

    Diesel: 12,000 miles / 43mpg = 279 gallons
    = 1,268 litres
    = €1,281

    Petrol: 12,000 miles / 28mpg = 429 gallons
    = 1,948 litres
    = €2,162

    Diesel works out a whopping €881 cheaper.

    +1, I forgot that diesel was cheaper. Is he looking at a turbocharged or a NA Forester?

    not sure that there were 2 types...

    I think the one I was swerving him towards had 158bhp? Is there any other type? It was a 2.0 litre

    There is certainly a big saving when it comes to the difference in mpg...didn't realise it would be that much

    did a bit of reading and I think in the later models the turbo was only on the 2.5, so it means it was a 2.0 I was telling him about.

    Diesels are better for the environment with their lower CO2 emissions. However they have a higher cost to the our health. Even with the modern filters in diesels, the emissons are very toxic relative to petrol. Wait for the diesel health levy in cars yet. They should be restricted from populated areas.

    True.

    "Newer" petrol contains lots of lovely benzine and other fun stuff though , they should've put a bit more research into it.

    Anyway , the diesel SUV might not be too bad if he goes for that, probably not as much fun as the Forester though
