BB Shell Threads Wrecked

I replaced the BB on my Focus Variado last night (Ultegra Hollowtech II). I was replacing the factory installed one. When the original came out (very easily, as expected) a bit of the threads from the frame came out with it, meaning I couldn't get the new BB in.

I'm very suprised by this-the bike's less than 2 years old and only has about 3000km on it, even if that. Only cycled in the rain a handful of times and is kept in a shed so weather doesn't really get near it.

I managed to get the new BB in, but it's not straight, so the shaft won't go in properly.

Can I get it re-tapped, or is it fecked? Any comeback with wiggle?

    Thanks

If you are in dublin go to Cycle Super Store and they will re-tap it for you for next to nothing probably €10. As for wiggle comeback you shouldn't have taken it out.

They'll just ask why it needed taking out and then if your qualified etc etc... then laugh at you. At least they don't say, oh your not using the latest version with the latest service pack....

I guess you're right. That's a load of crap though. At least it's not the end of the world. I'll get it re tapped asap so.

Out of interest-how many km should I get out of a BB? (specifically the one in question?). I thought it would've lasted longer.

I feel your pain. I wrecked the threads on my brand new zipp 900 disc a few years ago. An expensive lesson but one I'll never forget.

When screwing anything on always twist backwards by hand until you feel a little 'click'. Now the threads are aligned and you can go forward without risk of messing up the threads. Tigthen by hand for as much as possible and then finish off with a tool.

No good to you now I know.

Depends on how clean you keep your bike and how you clean you bike. Power hoses are a no no.

You may get longer out of a bb, but the Truativ ones can be pretty dodgy -I know I had to change bearing in mine after less than 8 months (Variado Expert)

I moved my groupset to a new frame recently and took the opportunity to change the BB from Ultegra to Dura-Ace. I thought the old BB was ok until I took it out and felt it with my fingers - definitely a bit crunchy and dry feeling. That was after about a year of use, maybe 5k or 6k kms on that bike.

On the upside BBs ain't that expensive so I wouldn't be heart broken if it turns out I get through one a year. I spend much more on chains and cassettes and bar tape and brake pads and tubes and tyres and on and on till the break of dawn and ....

Yeah it's the Variado Expert for moi too, Tiny. I rarely used it before, but I've loaned my commuter to a friend, so I've to use the Focus for commuting.

Ah well, live and learn. I thought it was knackered last night so I was furious. I gave cycleways a call there and they said they'd do it in a couple of minutes for me. (as much as i hate the shop, their workshop's pretty sound).

Having all the right tools, buying the part cheaper onine etc.... to save money and have the pride of doing it yourself, and then having to limp into the bike shop and say "fix my mess, please". Oh joy! :pac:

Focus Variado expert with FSA Mega Exo BB
Previous owner used it in dry, for racing, cared for .... 2 years
I used it for commuting starting just after Christmas ... 2 months ... BB died.

Regular cleaning of bike ... just use the shower .. no power hose.

Current BB ... on bike for 1640kms ... OK so far ... going to regrease the bearings at 2500kms though ... just for the heck of it.

FSA don't have a great reputation ... Shimano are supposed to be better.

I've heard of screwing up the threads when putting things back on ... but you are the first case of taking threads off while unthreading .. :) ... the threads were probably not greased properly when being installed .. and hence came out when you took the old one off ... I reckon this would have happenned even if the shop took it out .... don't be too hard on yourself.

Damaged threads in a BB shell is bit of a nightmare scenario alright. I'd heard that there was in issue with Focus, but I think that was the BB shell coming loose from the carbon frames. I'd see if they can tap the threads again. Hopefully you'll be OK.

I think RogerB had a similar issue with his Focus Cayo. From what I recall, he got it re-tapped somewhere. May have been the superstore, not sure though.

Been there done that... in my defense I think the company I ordered form online sent me the incorrect BB cups.... british and not italian. I threaded it up and well went to the different cycle stores looking to get it threaded correctly.

I think you're right, it wasn't particularly greasy when it came out.

cheer for the advice (I emailed Wiggle anyway, I also bought a lotto ticket. I can hope! :D)
