A clean slate for sex offenders?

Just saw this in the news today. T

    http://www.independent.ie/national-news/law-body-wants-sex-offenders-records-to-be-wiped-1739858.html

he government is pushing through legislation that would enable convicted criminals to receive a clean slate ie wiped criminal record after a certain period of time in order to reduce prejudice towards them in society. The Law Society of Ireland is calling for sex offenders to be covered by this scheme arguing that they are no more likely/unlikely to reoffend than anyone else. I think the new legislation is controversial whether or not it includes sex offenders.
It could mean that you hire somebody to work in your shop etc that had committed fraud, robbery etc just a few years previously. We would have to trust that the state institutions were correct in assessing this person as reformed. I think in certain situations such as employing etc one has a right to know whether a person has criminal convictions.

And as for sex offenders being included - try justifying that to the thousands of people who have been abused/ assaulted by sex offenders deemed suitable for release in the past.

How are bankers meant to get jobs when Stephen ends with the new change.

The second-chance law would not apply to persistent sex offenders or those who continue to pose a risk to public safety, and "sensitive" occupations would be excluded
Don't bother reading it or anything, just grab a pitchfork.

Are they suggesting that ALL sex offenders have their records wiped?
Could a peodophile potentially have their record wiped, and go work with children?
Somehow, I doubt that they're proposing this. It's probably just sensationalist reporting.

However, if someone nicked a packet of cornflakes X amount of years ago, i don't see why they should be punished for the rest of their lives.

Despite claims that the new law would not encompass giving clean slates to persistant offenders etc it's my view that anyone convicted of a child sex offence should never be allowed to work in positions dealing with kids - ever

Don't get me wrong - of course everybody deserves a second chance once they've served the sentence for the crime they committed but in no way should providing this second chance come at the cost of endangering others.
I'm not saying convicted sex offenders should be made wear big signs round their neck - simply that a permanent record should exist in law that details the crime they committed to act as a potential safeguard where possible.

No, child labor is illegal in this country.

A criminal record shouldn't be a life sentance in itself. Why reform if you will never get a job? Bout time imo.

People will remain exempt from working in 'sensitive' professions.

Just as well that thats not whats being proposed then.

Absolutely true. If people are to be released from prison and leave crime (of any kind) behind them, then the whole principle of a debt paid is crucial.

When someone has served their time in prison, it should be seen as with (in an ideal world) their debt to society paid. If they continue to pay in terms of alienation and discrimmination their chances of reoffending are surely much higher.

Sex offenders will all be registered. Its proposed that after a period of time, with a non-persistant offender, that the name be removed from the list, although the offender would be exempt from working in certain professions.

no way. 2 terrible mistakes were made but they are a drop in the ocean compared to genuine cases of abuse

She is refferring to what the law ACTUALLY will do, rather then what it COULD do, if rewritten.

Clearly she is new to AH.

Dude gets my vote every time.
If a man wants gay sex, then so be it.
I don't care about his private life as long as he does his job as a politician. And he does.

    Legalise prostitution.

So persistent sex offenders won't be covered, but they will be covered for the first and how many offences before they are regarded as persistent?:(

Personally I think the majority of offenders should be given a second chance, whether or not their record is wiped clean, however in the case of sexual offences my understanding is that generally re-offence is more common than for other crimes (I stand to be corrected as I am not sure where I have got this idea from). In the case of child sexual abuse, reoffence is more common as this is a sexual preference (the BBC ran a series of programs on the Met's sex crimes unit and interviewed a peadophile).

Thinking about it if the slate is wiped clean, how will persistent offenders of any sort be identified? Now I'm in two minds:eek:

I agree with legalising prostitution, but not in the country's biggest park.

Hopefully this is for cases where two close-in-age teens get caught banging and inevitably the lad goes down for statutory rape, or other equally retarded things.

Otherwise, I can't see this being a good idea.
