Movies for ps3

I have some movies on my laptop they are in avi format how can i transfer them to my PS3 what format do i convert them to .is there software to do this and is it free

Just throw them on a USB key and plug it in.

Then go to video -> USB Stick. Hit triangle, click 'Display all', and copy the videos to the PS3. Thats the easiest and fastest way tbh. No need to convert avi

Or use something like TVersity to stream them.
