Good power and grip. Heavy running costs.

Know a guy that had one, they're pretty high maintainance, active yaw control fluids need regular changes, the INVECS gearbox is smashing but again needs maintainance, they're a big bus of a car, but are indecently quick.

I'd have one over a Legacy. but they really are a niche model. don't buy one if you can't maintain it or afford the fuel.

I've no experience with the vr4 or galants in general so pointed the op to some sites that he/she might find useful, whats wrong with that?

Is the INVECS gearbox not the auto gearbox? Is it Tiptronic?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

    Yup INVECS = Automatic/Tiptronic.

Also, going by your user name, you seem to be around 19/20? have you checked insurance yet?

Condescending? Not at all - helpful, if anything! 'Nemo illegitimi carborundum', and all that pig Latin.

    Not your ornery onager

    properly as a vr4 though?

they shouldn't be too bad, there haven't been popular enough with young lads to have been black marked

They were certainly cheaper to insure than the car I have now, which is less powerful, but I'd still check before I bought or even looked at them if I were your age.

Decent car. Had one for 5 years. Expensive to run, common problem with the tappets, needs oil changed every few thousand miles (the expensive stuff too, amesol or something) to keep them in order. Listen for the tell tale tap when buying, walk on by if it's there. Went through two gearboxes in 5 years. To be honest the non-turbo V6 isn't massively less powerful to the average person, much cheaper to run, easier to find and dirt cheap. I switched over to the standard V6 after after 5 years and was still happy enough. If you just like the look of the VR4 might be worth considering. Of course if you're buying it specifically for those 2 massive hairdryers then that's something else entirely. It's good fun, enjoy if you do get it. The guys over on the vr4 forum (address given by earlier poster) are very friendly and helpful. Talk to them. A fair few Irish members there too.

Yes properly as a VR4. There classed in the sam class as the B4 Lecacy.
I cannot get a quote myself until im nearer the date that im 21 but I dont mind just having it in the yard getting it ready untill I can drive it.

What do you mean by this?

Tapping in the engine means the hydraulic lifters might need replacing. 24 valves there so you could be looking at a grand or more. It's VERY common in the V6, both turbo and non-turbo, especially if the oil isn't changed every few thousand miles and if good oil isn't used. Gets noisier as the oil gets thinner. Slight tapping is almost normal for these cars, and doesn't mean it's knackered. I had it in both mine very loud in the VR4 (tractor loud) and it was never more than annoying in my case. But to be honest I wouldn't take the chance.

24 tappets for an FTO non-MIVEC cost 350 and around 300 to fit them.

Are the galants non adjustable too?
