Have an unsightly mole/skintag on my back which can be seen during the summer when weather low tops.
went to doc today and she said I cant get it off via public health service as its not dangerous and would be seen as cosmetic!
Was fuming...so...does anyone know anyone/surgery who can remove it?
I dont have health insurance as cant afford it

If you cant afford health insurance, how will you afford this surgery?

It costs more than one years health insurance to get it removed privately. I have health insurance which covered all but my initial consulatation with the specialist. Mine was removed due to abnormality though not for any other reason. The scar that I have now is three times bigger than the mole that was removed and looks awful.

I'd think long and hard before getting it removed. How it heals depends on where it is though and unfortunately mine was on my spine line so it got stretched while healing.

Thats a harsh thing to say. Especially over a cosmetic mole. Though I wont try and make it political I just find it funny you'd say something like that over something as trivial as how you look in a bathing suit. If people dont work they shouldnt complain about the dole. similarly if you arent going to pay for health insurance dont be shocked when you get turned down for superficial treatment when the system is busy enough dealing with real health issues.

You should reconsider private health insurance. You can get a lot more out of it in a year than one mole removal. Try and consider the benefits.

The doctor told you you can't get it done publically because it's a cosmetic procedure... ? I don't get what you're asking!

There are a lot more important health requirements for the public services than vanity.

Its about the size of a finger nail located under my bra strap - it bleeds regularly...not just for cosmetic reasons - this is the word the doctor used...I have an issue with it cause its sore and bleeds..whatever...nice to see good Irish people caring...and am on the dole...have been on it for past 3 months so dont go on about that either...have a degree and cant find work in this country..you try living on what I have and see if you can save up €700 for health insurance yearly + your rent, travel...

I have a tag on my neck. Its not a mole at all. More like a punctured tyre with a plug in it. If ya know what I mean. Years ago my mother put a string around it tightly and a few days later it fell off. Your one might be different than mine though. Mine actually looks like a skin snot to be precise. Someone seen it one day and tried to flick it off.
It grew back a few times and all I do is just get the ould scissors out and off with it.

That might be a plan! :)

That workd for skintags....I wouldn't go messing around with moles though.

If it is bleeding that can't be a good thing. Would you think about getting a second opinion?

So you're on the dole and you want the public to pay for a cosmetic procedure? That's a bit rich. You say it bleeds but I wonder why you left that out of your first post.

Thats right my friend...have been paying taxes for the last 15 years and considering its my second time unemplyed in my life I would expect a little help..looking at your posts dont think you would get that though...you dont happen to work for the HSE/Public Service..you have that kind of right attitude...narrow

Get a second opinion and make sure to stress the bleeding bit, not so much the fact that you think it is unsightly. The public hospitals do what are considered 'cosmetic' procedures all the time. There may be a long wait, but you can get moles removed on the public system.

Right, you never said it was painful OR bleeding, all you said is that it was unsightly and looked bad. So don't be getting all annoyed at us.

You'll need a second opinion from another doctor and whatever you do, don't mention that it's unsightly AT ALL, tell them how inconvenient it is and painful and bleeding etc etc etc. They might give you a referral then, but you're still gonna have to pay for treatment, it'll just be a bit cheaper.

Do you not realise that the scar post removal will probably look worse than the mole as it is now! Is it possible that you're catching it in your bra causing it to bleed?

OP, if you want to rant go somewhere else to do it. If you have a genuine PI please start another thread but it would seem that you have no alternative other than to pay for health insurance or the operation yourself so I'm not sure what more advice you can be given.

    Thread closed.
