Just a quick question but is the Humax HDR you've all been talking about the one on the Richer Sounds site that's the Humax Foxsat HDR with the 320Gb drive? I'm just curious becuase the page says it's a Freesat+ box but the heading says something about freeview.

    It's this one: http://www.richersounds.ie/asp/product.asp?ObjectID=930&Mode=0&productid=840&Results=true&keys=Humax

    thanks!

That's the one. Reference to Freeview is an error - as if there wasn't enough Freesat/Freeview confusuion.

Thanks Evilivor... I'll order one so! Do I need two Sat feeds for this box then if I want to record one channel while watching another or is there a solution to split the one feed I have, or can I daisychain them in any way?

need 2 feeds from your dish, exactly the same as sky+ requires

If the channel you're watching is on the same transponder as the one you want to record then it's possible to do this with one feed cable. When the box is recording the EPG selection is "greyed out" on the channels you can't watch. For example you can record on BBC4 and watch BBC2 England at the same time. Or, if you have two cable feeds you can record two programmes while watching a third on one of the used transponders.

    Looks nice.

What can be done with the "ethernet support"? Can recorded shows be accessed remotely over a network or can the HDR watch content saved remotely?

I believe the ethernet port is for future use (i-player type support over the net).
You can download saved programmes from the hard disk to an external device via USB. This works except for BBC HD, which is encrypted by the Humax box to prevent casual copying of copyright-marked programmes - it's a Freesat requirement which Humax implemented. This can be circumvented by putting the box in non-Freesat mode and then recording.

I'm very seriously considering buying one of these boxes. Goodbye and good riddance to sky. The only channels I'd miss at all are Dave and Gold, and they really only show repeats anyway.

Just checking - I presume the HD box will work on an old non-HD TV. I might be able to buy a HD TV when the recession's over!!!

Just found the answer to my own question here:

    I think I'm converted!

The humax hdr has scart connection as well as hdmi.

Once you have an unused scart connector on the back of your tv,You're sorted.

It will be unused as soon as the sky box is removed!

    @ Ronny Mitchell

BBC iplayer content is blocked to irish ip addresses on the net.( though strangely not itv player or channel 4od aren't)

I would imagine that bbc iplayer content would be blocked through the ethernet port on the hdr as well to irish ip adresses.

    @ Ozzie

I kept our non subscription sky box side by side with the humax hdr until we got used to the hdr.

If running the extra cables is possible of course.

got my box for a few days now and i think it is well worth the money.
The picture quality is perfect (i have a 32" samsung hd-ready tv). The SD channels are excellent quality and although there is a difference between SD and HD is noticable, the SD quality (unscaling) is excellent.

The quality of the recordings is perfect too, it is like watching the original feed.

Very Happy i made the investment. I highly recommend them.

I still have my sky box beside it for Setanta Sports purposes only. The whole messing about with the CAM was too much hastle.

Very happy with the humax and i highly recommend it.

Just got my humax hdr from Richer Sounds and its a great box,but iam curious what postal code i should use?? the first code i came across on google was (SW1A 1AA) so i entered this into the box space incl, but the channel search does not give me UTV or ITV hd .I do get BBC hd and the ITV channels,i know that UTV has only some regional differences like news and so on but i thought these were supposed to come up at the end of the prog list, and where is ITV hd. Can somebody please suggest which postal code is the best to use?

You have to manually tune in UTV and ITV HD only becomes available through the Red Button on ITV when they show a program in HD. They is no dedicated channel for ITV HD like there is for BBC HD.

If you prefer UTV (God knows why..?, maybe your just used to it) you can put in a NI postcode (BT1 2DX for instance).

When you are using a NI postcode ITV HD will not be available on ch 103 UTV. Instead, ITV1 London will be available on channel 977 for red-button ITV HD.

BTW only all the BBC Regions are currently available at the end of the EPG.

i entered a london postcode to avail of ITV-HD. ITV-HD is not a specific channel, just ITV1 with an option to press the red button and avail of HD whenever they decide to broadcast a programme in HD. you cannot access ITV HD if you enter a Northern Ireland or Scotland postcode.

Many thanks everyone,i will just leave the post code as it is,set to London.I dont realy need UTV but my last satellite receiver was an Mvision HD combo and it had UTV and ITV hd on the channel listings so i thought the Humax HDR would do the same. But if ITV hd will be available (whenever its on) with the London post code iam happy, THANKS.

See last post, above. You can put in an NI Postcode for UTV and still receive ITV HD on channel 977. :)
