I was excited to see that the much hyped sling player (for slingbox) finally came out today for the iphone.

However....how come the Apple store says that its not available for Ireland?

Is this some snake oil deal that O2 have done to protect their 3g / GPRS revenue streams? The slingplayer only works over WIFI

As per At&t right now its only wifi, that was as far as i can guess to protect their 3g download speeds. Pisses me off though as other providers can do it why not att. I would be less inclined to buy now when its limited to wifi

I couldnt hazard a guess why O2 would not let this into ireland.

I would say it is more due to quality of service issues. Streaming video over a 3g link could be very prone to being jumpy/jerky/out of synch.

Yes but it only works on wifi, so why would it not be available in Ireland?

well its trivial to get any of those wifi only apps to work over 3g on the o2 network. I have Skype voice on the iphone 3g running like a charm.

My opinion is that O2 don't see wifi as a revenue stream and want to keep people on the network.

They have long being looking for an app that will consume bandwidth so are hamstrung between wanting the killer app (but apple not supporting 3g for sling player) and not wishing their 'device' to be used extensively for off network use i.e. wifi.

This of course is all just IMHO, before O2 set their dogs of war, legal and regulatory team on me

I see some people reporting it is available in the UK but it hasn't reached the Irish Appstore yet. Hopefully soon. It's a bummer that they crippled it to not work on 3G (AT&T's fault) but why cripple it for other international markets using other carriers is beyond me.

Nevertheless, I still want to try this App out despite the steep price.

when it does come out for IE it will be easy to make it work over 3g. Skype is the same, but installation of a package through Cydia tricks the app into thinking that its on wireless when actually on 3g

I pirated the app as there's no sign of it coming to the Ireland store. Was surprsed sling didn't put piracy protection into the app seeing as it costs so much. If it does appear in the app store I'll prob buy it though. Works great over wifi and tried it out over 3G (using the cydia app trick) briefly yesterday and its works brilliantly! Note, you'll also have to download a cydia app to trick the app into thinking you have 2.2.1 firmware

can you let us know how you got the app to try it in ireland. i use slingplayer all the time on my pc /mac and ipaq i think the one for the iphone would be better and there is no sign off it in the apps store in ireland

No more talk of piracy, please.

I won't say anything about the pirating aspect of it. Google's your friend there. I dare say 02 blocked it completely here as there's no other reason for it not to be in the app store.

Slingplayer is currently only available in US, UK and Canadian Istores. It wont work on O2 over 3G here, have it and tried it using an app that tricks your iphone into thinking 3G is wifi, does work over standard wifi though.

I'd have no problem "only" using it over wifi, but not at that price.
    Also... I need a sling box :/

any updates here? Any1 know if this app will actually appear in the irish itunes store anytime soon?

Also, how data intensive is this if used over 3g? i.e, if you watched tv for 30 mins, how much data would this use? Loads I'm thinking....

You'll be waiting a long time I reckon! I haven't used it for that long a period in one go but it's a fairly large stream of traffic so you'd go through through your allowance fairly handy I reckon. Main problem is that it crucifies your battery when you run it over 3G!

any reason its not available here tho?Officially its only available over wifi anyway, so I don't see why we don't get it..unless 02 are convinced that every1 will be using it over 3g with their jailbroken phones?

There's plenty of conspiracy theories alright but I really don't know. The only thing I would say is the markets it's currently in are the markets where the most slingboxes are sold so maybe they're just concentrating their efforts on the biggest demographic. Slingbox have hardly any presence in Ireland - if you select Ireland on their website they redirect you to the UK one!

According to BBC, every 10 minutes is around 7.2mb

Sure the device is the same as far as the software is concerned - don't see why Sling Media are cutting off a revenue stream? I'm sorry I bought that box now when I see other units :(

Slingplayer mobile for iPhone is now available on the Irish Appstore for 23.99. Slingmedia have finally got their act together to cater for the Irish market. However, as with the uk and us version, only works over wi-fi.
