Can someone point me in the direction of the best disk/file recovery tool to recover files from a damaged/crashed hard drive.

My laptop hard drive crashed and I replaced it & rebuilt my laptop. I now have the damaged drive in an external SATA 2.5" USB drive enclosure but Vista wants me to format the drive before it will recognise it.

Need a software tool that will scan the drive and allow me get back files that are not on the damaged part of the disk.

    Tks.
    :D

SEE www.pcinspector.de free recovery program.I THiNK its easier to put the sata inside a pc.if you have a pc with a sata mobo interface.
it should be recogniseing the drive as drive d or e external usb device.
you cant recover files if it doesnt detect the sata hd properly.
ie i got a caddy 2.5inch put in a sata 300gig .ITS not detected by any pc.thru usb nterface.
Ill HAVE 2 put it in a pc with mobo sata slot to recover the files.
I THINk THE hd is too big.is not getting enuff power thru the usb caddy.it says usb device installed but no device appears in MY computer.

Recuva is no good for what I need to do!

I have come across software called 'GetDataBack' and it's looking like this will do the job. Will report back later.

Wow, GetDataBack. What an incredible piece of software. Scanned my damaged drive (which took all night & this morning) but pieced together the files & I was able to recover about 90% of what I needed.
