Right, I've never played the game but have watched it on telly and believe I have a fair grasp of the 'laws' of the game.
I'm fairly fit, having played GAA all my life.

How do you go about joining a club that would be happy to, not just let you join, but also, teach you the game.

I took up rugby for the first time last October. We started a 7s team in college, 20-odd lads showed up and we ended up forming a full 15-a-side team. Half of us had real rugby experience, the other half were all athletes from other codes.

I've always played in goals so I'd be used to using my hands and taking a few hits. This made me feel a bit more comfortable about playing, but there's no better way of learning than proper total immersion. Once you make it clear that you're willing to work your hardest to learn and pick up the game, you should get some patience from coaches. It takes a good while to get accustomed to tackling and being tackled, not holding on, etc, but all of these can be worked on. You'd probably be expected to do a certain amount of weights training as well.

As for finding a club, you'll have to be more specific about your location.

i think the is a sticky thread on how to join a club or start rugby
if/when you join a club just say you've never played before, its not like they'll throw you in at hooker on your first day!
alot of rugby training is in essence working on the basics i.e. tackling, passing, decsion making.
so once you join you'll pick it up and so be eased in from there.
if i remember the gaa lads who joined my old club were able to pick it up pretty quick, they usually ended up being backs too
