A raised percolation bed is required when the site soil is deemed unsuitable for discharge of excess water from sewerage plant, the water will not percolate quickly enough through the existing soil on site. It is then necessary to build a raised bed, using imported graded soil suitable for percolation. The airiated excess water from the sewerage system is pumped to a distibution box situated in the middle of the percolation bed and is distributed through 4 outflow pipes within the percolation area, before being finally discharged into ditch.

Thats the jist of it, someone more tecnically minded will fill you in n the finer details !
