Weird Vista Drive Space Lost!

I had a load of files in my <user>\Videos folder on my Vista Ultimate laptop. Went to look for a file the other day & discovered all the files were gone

Nothing in the recycle bin and didn't accidentally shift them someplace else on the drive as I searched for them.

Funny thing now is that the space they took up (about 30GB) is still missing off the hard drive  I used a piece of software called 'Where'd All My Space Go' which tots up all the space used on your drive and what it reports as being used is approx 30GB less than whats physically missing off the hard drive.

    Any ideas?

give space monger a go , give a nice graphical representation of the drives and folders , very easy to see, whats where and how much its taking up, you should have no trouble spotting a folder with 30gbs in it

Tks, tried Space Monger and it comes back with a strange grey colored space under the free space. The grey space is 'Unscanned 14% / 41.7GB, Unscannable Folders: 3'

This is the missing space but whats going on & why is it not scannable or accessible?

    Sorted :D

It was Vista alocating a full 15% or 41.7GB of my disk space to System Restore points

Used the Vista command line 'vssadmin Resize ShadowStorage' to reduce this to 5GB and I have all my space back.

    Cheers

Vista has been a failure of a release by Microsofts standards. Many people not happy with it from what I hear and many not even "upgrading" to it.
