    HI all,

    Im new to this site. Basically, if been running for a couple of months now and am really enjoying it. Im hoping to do the womens mini marathon in June. The best run ive done so far is 10k in 50mins so I was really proud of myself. Anyway, after the first few runs my knee started acting up so I went to see a Physio who told me it was "runners knee".

    He has given me stretching exercises to do and to put an ice pack on it 3 times a day. He also did a scan of my feet and said I would benefit from Orthotics (custom made ones). They cost €300. Im just not 100% about getting them so would really appreciate it if somebody could please tell me their experience with them either good or bad.

    runners knee?? that is an astute diagnosis

    i have orthotics but i've had years of problems so i I paid the full wack, they work

    but if you only just started running i wouldn't pay yet.

    have you tried going to a proper running shop like the one out in bray, they apparently give the best advice on what type of runner you need

    they come in the same box as in the link but i think i remember them being blue, one problem is that they're not a full insole so they might move around if you run

    definately worth a try to save you the money

    Runners knee (patellofemoral syndrome) is essentially when the tracking of the knee cap is slightly off. Another common condition is patellar tendonitis, often referred to as jumpers knee. Both can cause pain after running. With these type of conditions, it is important that you are giving yourself sufficient rest in between runs.

    I have tried orthotics in the past (paid €300 for the custom ones bout 3 years ago) and to be honest, I never found them any good at all. So much so that I stopped using them. If it's either of the conditions i've mentioned above, there is a possibility that you may have a slight imbalance in your quadraceps (i.e. the strength and developments of the 4 quad muscles). Try doing squats (deep ones, below parallel, making sure that your knees do not move forward) as these will strengthen the quadracep muscles and thus put less strain on the patellar tendon. They will also strengthen the glutes and hamstrings, which is important as weekness in these areas can often be a factor in knee allignment/tracking issues.

    Funnily enough, I started this thread here yesterday on how deep squats have helped my own knee problems http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055563030. I would recommend checking out Malteaser!'s fitness log as an example of a girl who squats correctly with the proper range of motion and form.

    go to a sport shop that will analyse your feet and gait

    http://www.mysport.ie/ <<<< this shop is very good but may not be convenient.

    proper support whether you pronate or suponate (not sure if thats the word) can make a big difference and wont cost you 300 bobs!

    Thanks silcus ricus. That is exactly what he said I had. The tracking of the knee cap being off. He did give me the medical term but I just couldnt remember it..so easier to say "runners knee" which is also what he called it.

    He did give me exercises for the quads and hip flexors. I have been doing these and have noticed that there is a bit of an improvement already.

    Judging by the replies I think I may stick with the streches and resting for a while until I feel it completely better.

    I did go to Elverys sports when I needed a new pair and the guy there got me to go on a threadmill and run. He watched it on camera and was able to advise me on a pair of runners that would suit. They werent dear at all and they are New Balance and very comfortable. The problem might have started with the runners I had before them which were very flat.

    Anyway, thank you all for taking the time to reply. I will leave it for a few more weeks and see how I get on.

    No worries babybel, glad to be of help. Do let us know how you get on with the stretches/ exercises your physio gave you.

    If you do become interested in doing squats or other weighted leg strengthening exercises, there are plenty of people here who can give you technique pointers.

    @babybel, I had the same issue recently and my physio said I could go for the €300 euro ones or I could get some custom ones made from a company called PPL Biomechanics, they only cost €50 but they only accept orders from qualified medical examiners...

    I havent used them properly yet, you have to break them in over 2 - 6 weeks but they seem to look better than any of the other ones I have used. They have a lot of support.

    Does anyone know if you need Orthotics, should you still continue running or wait until a couple of weeks while your feet adjust to the Orthotics?
