larger shoes should work if the problem is your toes banging off the end of your shoe during the run?

Agree with HM, try a larger shoe size perhaps half a size up from your normal size??? Wish I had figured that out before my first marathon... I can confirm that I haven't lost a single nail since!!!;)

this thread has just made me realise that I currently have 10 toenails, first time in years. Admitedly one has only just grown back so pushing it to call it full length :-) Black nail varnish here I come!

cut and file your toenails. The filing really helps (and makes them look pretty)

It's important to keep toes trimmed regularly to avoid this type of thing. ;)

I always wear a full size bigger - never had a bruised toe or a black nail ever. Lots of other problems but never the toes

silverside - if you had no toe nails, you'd probably be a bit cross too!

I had this EXACT same problem about 2 months ago until I started using Sole Antiblister socks.

2 of my toenails have still not grown back but since getting the Sole socks I have had no blisters and my toenails have been fine.

Am sure these will sort you out, they're the job!

Not running related as such but I have a similar problem. I'm back playing football and about 2 months ago someone stepped on my toe - nail is now half black on the right side. Same thing happened last night and it was so painful it kept me awake! This is on the left side.

So I'm just wondering, the nail is starting to lift from the right side but is still really painful on the left side. So do I try to drain the blood from the left side or do I just face the inevitable and wait for the nail to fall off?

Also, how painful will it be without a toenail? Considering I play GAA and use the foot for kicking primarily.

it shouldn't be painful without the toenail. As for deciding if you should drain it or not, a medic might be better placed to decide that.

I had a similar thing last year from playing footie - though it was just from stubbing my toe on an astro turf at high speed.
Pain was so bad I went to the doctor a couple of days later, but she said if I had gone to her earlier, rather than 48 hours after the incident, she could have drained the blood to ease the pain.
The pain was from the build-up of the blood pressurising the nail, to the point where when the blood started to dry up, the pain started to ease.

Said there wasn't much point in doing anything further, as the pain was actually improving, though it was still very sore.
At the time she suspected it was so bad I would lose the nail for good, and gave me painkillers to help me sleep for a few days.

Nail eventually dropped/I cut it off, but luckily it grew back ok and is now fine.
