Getting background check for job

    Hi

I've been offered a job in a summer camp in the USA and, as a condition of my employment, I've to provide them with a background check conducted by my local law enforcement agency.

I've nothing to hide and no problem doing the checks, however, I have no idea how to get one done! It seems the certificate of character can't be used for a job, but garda vetting is only for organizations registered with the gardai. What can I do?!

You won't be getting the job. Vetting is a serious process and can take months. Sorry.

    Eh.... I dont think so......
The OP is wondering how he can get a background check done on himself by the local law enforcement agency, similiar to the background checks that sometimes have to happen to get a job in certain financial institutions. The Gardai however have nothing that will do for this particular need, vetting not being possible and character ref not being possible either.
I would hope that someone who has done this before will be able to assist.

    EDIT:
I think you MAY need to start somewhere like here:
    http://www.esrcheck.com/international.php
Although as I said someone who has gone through this before should be able to help.

So you don't think so but yet you kind of say how it is impossible. Trust me, it is not going to happen.

I didnt say it was impossible. I pointed out to you what the OP said. That the Gardai didnt seem to be able to help via the normal channels......for reasons outlined.

You're a sharp one. Ok time for a bit of logic.

    Therefore....no clearance, no job.

    So wait a minute.....
Initially you said that the check wasnt possible due to the time needed to do this........
Now its because the Gardai dont APPEAR to be able to do this?

You dont think its possible that Irish people who have had these roles have been able to get these checks done in the past and that they may in fact be able to help the OP more than your misguided first statement?

Time is number 1. Not sure about them actually doing it. Either way she is not going and you are a bit silly,.

You seem to be extremely certain of this.
Have you been in this situation before?
I suggest you withdraw that last comment.

Yes I waited 4 months because of it. Now I work for Dept. Justice.

You were the subject of Garda vetting.......I know of many people in this position.
A background check is a different kettle of fish (at least from what I recall). I had two background checks for previous jobs that took less than 2 weeks (both in Ireland)

I've had to have this done too.
It took 8 working days but I had it organised for me through the company.

I'm not sure who was contacted about it TBH.

and I was gonna start a thread about why I have no confidence in the Government/Dept of Justice.......

I think this thread has managed to cover everything.

Odd, in my experience it was up to the employer to sort out your clearance. When I did my stint in the states I was fingerprinted, gave my details and they checked me out. I advise you to contact the agency to either beg for time or clarify issues. (If the conditions are similiar to my day then you are not going over for the money so they can afford to be flexible).

OP how much do you know about this agency? Most are great but some are well dodgy. Hard but very interesting work........;)

Do you know if you can go home early without penality?

Who buys and holds your ticket home? When do you get "paid" (and make sure if there are situations where you could owe them money?

Who is responsible for your health insurance?
Are there appropiate living conditions for you? (when the camp is between sessions where do you stay?

Do you have anywhere private to store your stuff?)

If it helps, I needed a letter from the gardai for my NZ residency application. I wrote a letter to the superintendent of my district at home giving all my addresses I had lived at in Ireland, my name and date of birth.

A week later I received a letter stating my name, date of birth and that I had no criminal convictions. Would that be sufficent for your job application? When I rang the gardai none of them had a clue what to do, a lot of people apply for Aus/NZ visas so I fail too see how they wouldn't have a clue and why no process was in place. Luckily the letter to the superintendent worked quickly.

I think what watna said would suffice. I mean how are they going to know what searches were done?

It takes two weeks for the Defense Forces to run a full Garda check on you.

Photojoe: sounds like you got processed around the time of government-related recruitment. Even though it only took 2 weeks for me, I know of people that it took several weeks, due to a backlog caused by a company of builders having to get vetted, as they would be working in Áras an Uachtaráin. That, and they'd have to ensure that nothing slipped by them if you getting a job in the DoJ.

I got a security check done recently, something to do with getting a passport. Didn't take very long. Maybe half a month.

I got a Garda background check done a few years back- it took around about 3 weeks.

The wait is down to 4 weeks now.

I think its obvious that a background check can now be done in the required time.
I believe the OP's initial problem was that they didnt know how to getting it done.....
For example people here have advised that the Gardai can do one, the company you are going to work for usually gets it done but in the OP's case the organization has asked them to do the check done.
