I dunno about the ampegs these days, since theyve jumped ship to china there build quality has suposedly gone down hill.

I personally like Ashdown, great amps imo, own a klystron 500 myself and i love it(bar one time where it just died for no reason, it came back working a week or so later but still noones figured out what happened). I think there sound would fit in with your music aswell, especially there new all tube model.

Other great brands to check out would be gallien kruger, there very flexible great amps, as with SWR.

your options are vary varied, and the volume you require should dictate the type of amp that you need/ want.
    I've used SVT-Classic
Sounds amazing with the right cabs, but is very heavy and valve replacments every couple of years can be expensive. The SVT3 pro is alos a loveley head. Ampegs answer to the ashdown ABM. Unless you have a van or a good boot in your car, I'd avoid buying the SVT-CL, it weighs 6-7 stone without a cab.

I currently use my trusty ashdown ABM300 Mk1 with 2x 10 and 1x15. this gives me flexibility volume and portability. the head and 2x10 being the main small venue tools with he 1x15 added for bigger rooms or use with my 5 string bass.

as regards makers of the amps this is very personal thing, I have firends who swear by GK, others use SWR etc. basically what fits your "sound"
    GK,EDEN,EBS,SWR,Ashdown,Peavey, Ampeg,markbass.....
Whatever you buy try to test it against something else that you like or are familiar with.
One other point, try to get a hybrid head with a blend for tube or solid state, this way you'll have additional flexibility.

Perhaps you should go to some gigs to see what's being used and how it sounds, in the type of venue that you want to play. small pub gigs are great for this as you can hear the amps actually thumping away and not hidden under a 5 kW PA.

either way you'll have fun finding your amp,....best of luck

    hey marmarsings
you have it. Ampeg. my advise is don't look past them. I recently got the SVT- 450h with the SVT 410 cab and i've never been happier with my sound.
I've got this beautiful warm tone i never had before. You'll need to put a few more euro onto your budget but it's worth it, imo anyway. It's my first ampeg so i can't comment on any other of their heads or combos.
    Best of luck

Ive got an Eden too, picked it up on adverts - it is impossibly good..

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Eden-WT-550-Traveler-Bass-Amp-Head-Tube-WT550-mint_W0QQitemZ310142736359QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item4835f297e7&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A1|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

This is the 500 watt version (I have the 350, its very loud for a 350) of what I have. Its the tone of a classic like an ampeg, but it fits in a school bag. weighs nothing - will power big cabs - perfect

also at gigs where its not feasible to bring my own cab, I run this as a DI with no cab attached - maybe input to another bass amp for monitor..

thats my two cents, I really cant picture me ever switching to another brand..

Il say, the one eden ive ever played was sexual. Dont have a clue what model number it was but the tone i got out of it was great with limited tinkerinig. My understanding is there pretty steap though?

You wont get one new cheap, thats for sure. I was lucky, I got mine for €500 last summer (it was on adverts and none of you bought it..). There are usually a few floating around ebay.. I got an ampeg cab a couple of weeks later for €400. Add that to the Lefty American P-bass i got for €500 euro, €1400 all in for a great set-up..

Well I have to agree with those who promote the Ampeg route. I've gone through alot of setups and it was when I got my USA made SVT4 and 410hlf it simple pissed over everything else. Only issue is the aul weight, again I can say I've heard stories about the non USA made ones, but then again there only stories. The lads over on HCBF don't seem to be too worried about the newer models.

As for something non Ampeg. GK are great bang for buck amp. I heard one at a Festival and feck me, its loud.

After that, Genz Benz have great setups, small and light.

    Happy shopping.

How much does it matter what instrument you are using with the amp? Does it matter as much as it does with a guitar for instance?

Well, one guy on HCBF went through 3 Nampegs (nickname for Ampegs made in Vietnam) and eventually gave up. I don't know of anyone over there who currently has a chinese or vietnam Ampeg. Most guys who have Ampegs have older USA ones or a some have vintage ones.
