Just looking to see if anyone else has had trouble with their gearbox in any of VAG's 1.9tdi 5 speed box. Mine has to be replaced with only 80K klms on the clock. First quote is over two grand with no help from VW HQ towards the costs as I am out of warranty.

We have a 2.0TDi DSG in with serious gearbox problems at the minute. VW wont cover any of it either, because its out of warranty. They dont seem to be too good on the warranty front these days.

As for the 1.9TDi, we have had a alot of clutch problems with them recently, but i cant remember any gearbox trouble.

What exactly is the problem? Not a 1.9 but I've had trouble with a VAG box in a 1.6 lately and wouldn't mind some extra info...

    Passat boxes do give trouble.

Mate of mine had a 6spd one give up the ghost. AFAIK it was quite expensive to fix

Once I take my foot off the accelerator in 4th gear the gearstick rattles and shakes so much now that you have to hold your hand on the gearstick. Now its very nosiy in revs through the gears but nothing like what happens in 4th...

I first thought it was Clutch/Flywheel issue but VW garage say its gearbox.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Yes I know of a few cases of the gearbox in 1.9tdi Skoda Octavia giving trouble. Its the same unit as far as I know. All the cases ive seen with this involved a problem with 5 gear. Skoda covered some of these out of warranty (3 years old on a 2 year warranty)
They said that new gearbox was the cure. In one case, a similar problem occured again after a further 6 months but the second time it only required a selector bush or something like that. Perhaps this was the original problem too?
Anyway I would get on to VW to register my displeasure. Someone said things would possibly improve now with VW/Audi now that they are more directly controlled in Ireland but Ive yet to see it.

    Defo not the same box.

Octavia is transverse mounted engine and box, Passat is longitudinally mounted

can't comment on the 5-speed, but I had to replace mine at 64k miles. Main bearing. Mine is a 6-speed. I am let to believe that the 6-speed boxes are ****e.
The fourth gear vibration is strange though. Sorry i don't had any valuable info for you.

Got my hands on a gearbox from last Friday. Anyway only got round looking at the car today. When the gearbox was removed all was there to see.

It seems that the Flywheel did not collapse but it a piece broke off. It pierced the housing of the gearbox inside which made most of the gearbox fluid piss out. By the time I started hearing the noise the damage was done. (I will post some photo's in the days to come. So I have a gearbox and now I will also have to replace the Clutch and Flywheel. I am putting in a solid single Flywheel which is now available from LUX (the people who make the DMF for VW)

All in all not a good experience. Now I have to go... I on the phone to the samaratins:(
