Does anyone watch Secret Millionaire on Ch4. These multi millionaires are soooooo unbelievably miserable. Gifts of £7,500 and so on for projects that need £250k+. The recipients just look at them thinking "You are sooooo miserable!". It explains why they are rich I suppose. They must be heartless or devoid of reality if they think their poxy donations will make the slightest difference to exceptionally worthy charities & individuals. Channel 4 must be paying the recipients to smile when they are offered the insult money. Check it out for yourselves: http://secretmillionaire.channel4.com/watch.shtml

'Millionaires' don't keep all their money in cash. It's all tied up in assets. They don't actually have millions to give away.

Beyond the initial donation, most of the millionaires seem to follow up with further donations and ongoing interest in the projects.
What amazed me is how far some of those donations can go in the UK, even though they look relatively small.

They donate £40,000. Correct me if I'm wrong though... This is divded amongst the different people. No matter how much each get, it is making and helping to chance change peoples lifes even if small and I have yet to hear them complain!

I watched it last night and enjoyed it. Was nice to see at the end how much these people appreciated it.

Yeah 40k they give. For last night £7,500 to the young mums, £7,500 to the guy that helps with food deliveries plus 2k for himself to take a deserved holiday, £7,500 for the old/young peoples club and the £13k for the polish couple.

Of course it's better than nothing. Giving £0.50 is better than nothing. Taking that these guys are worth £10m on average then £40,000 is like your average Joe with £30k giving £120. They could do so much more in my book. Chuck Feeney the secret billionaire puts their miserable donations in perspective: http://www.reuters.com/article/reutersEdge/idUSL1186134020070921

I suppose the best metric is to watch the next series and try to predict how much each should realistically get and see how much the donation falls short. If they were in Church and put a fiver in the basket they would probably take out change! :) Just goes to show that the normal Joe still makes the greater proportional contribution. Thanks for the replies. Its good to see your views on it.

You obviously haven't watched all the Series. They often give an awful lot more than £7,500

And tbh, the mentoring that they receive is often a hell of a lot more valuable than the money.

OP, how much of your life earnings have you given to charity?

I think he was saying that was an example of what one person might be given!

An example, but not the norm.

I don't know if OP relates to me but on average thru direct debit I give 8% of gross per week which beats paying it on taxes so doing the maths I give @€;60 a week so about €3,120p.a - From actually doing about 6 collections for charities and being involved particularly around xmas I would bring in about 20K throughout the yr.

    That's not enough.

You could be right. Always an opportunity to do more.

I reckon the people and projects featured must know (certainly by now anyway) that money is coming their way. It's perhaps not so much of a "secret" after all.

Besides it's hard rocket science to put on a good show when someones waving a camera in your face.

There was one in the current series when the first person the guy met asked him: "You're not the secret millionaire are you?"

    lol

Some episodes are better than others. But I've generally found them all pretty generous.

What a load of ****e that was, Are you actually complaining that someone giving 7,500 pounds of there hard earned money to people that need it is as you said "heartless"?!?!

I hate the mentality, that just because people are rich they HAVE to give there money to a good cause... Why?
They earn it working just like you and just because they earn more doesn't mean they must give half of it away as if they owe someone something for there fortune.

I severly doubt you would be giving 75 euro each to strangers let alone 7,500!!
And honestly if someone gave me 50 euro I'd be VERY happy let alone 7 and half bloody grand, Jesus...

What a load of bo####ks that was! Who mentioned half? You must write the headlines for the Sun. Have a beer there to destress!

I have watched this programme from the start and last weeks had to be one of the worst.

She made very poor decisions and for having companies valued at over €17m she wasnt very generous. I got the feeling she was hung up on her own regrets of not having any kids!!!

Most times I feel like a selfish sh1t after watching the programme but last week I felt more pissed off that she was so blind sided by her own problems!

I wonder what the US version of the show is like??

Probably hosted by some young girl with an annoying Californian accent who visits the down and outs shreeking "Oh My God" relentlessly. Then after ten or more ad breaks we see her inviting a lucky chosen one to spend a weekend with her at her Beverly Hills mansion or something.

    Oh My God!

There is no set amount though

There should be, but the amount should be relative to your fortune!

That's silly considering it's an act of charity.

Dont kid yourself, if it was an act of charity they wouldnt be on the TV show!

To me the secret millionaires get a lot from the show in the way of dealing with their demons. Dont get me wrong they are a blessing to many charities/organisations on the show and most are very generous but they get a lot in return for the donations which they make!

I would consider that the most generous philanthropists are unknown and dont do it for the glory!

But you could say that of anybody that gives to charity.

Indeed, Chuck Feeney probably being one of the most high profile of them that I know of that kept his anonymity. Although he ended up going public eventually.

Oh right. Sorry I just saw one episode and assumed that they were limited in the amount they could give.

Well I think the last woman got great value for money, she has a €15m fortune and gave €40k. If its not the glory and they want to make a difference they should give up 1% of their fortune.

If I gave up over €2.5billion to good causes I would want a little recognition! I wonder how much recognition Bill Gates will want for his €27 billion??

Uhh, Why don't you give up 1% of your fortune then to charity.. Jesus she doesn't owe the people she is giving anything so 40k of her hard earned money is very generous, well to me anyway.
