    Hi all,

    I am currently doing the couch to 5k for no other reason, than I want to... I have lost 27lbs so far and have another 7 to go to get to where I want to be. I have only the last month start really excersicing and I have to admit - I LOVE IT !!! I love the feeling it gives everything.. anyway enough ranting ... here's my question.

    I see that everything says that I need a rest day and I wanted to know can I do the something like this or do I need to rest my muscles.

    Day 1
    5k walk / jog
    Toning DVD working the muscles.

    Day 2
    45 minutes fast walk

    Day 3
    5k walk / jog

    Day 4
    Rest

    Day 5
    5k walk / jog
    Toning DVD

    Day 6
    45 minute Cardio DVD

    Day 7
    Rest - (even God rested on the 7th day !)


    I am 5 7' and weigh 10 stone 10 lbs. I want to get to 10 stone 3lbs, but I feel the only 'problem area' is stomach and hips after 2 children and want to try tone up now more than anything - apart from loosing the last 7 lbs I mean.

    Do you think this is OK. Once I get to my target weight I would like to do a 10k

    First off great work.

    You can run 6 days a week, But only do 1 long run a week (12k+)


    What you have said above is fine. But there is no reason why you shouldn't be pushing for 10k now.


    If your able to do 5k non stop. Push it out to 5.5 then 6 and so on. Week by week at .5 to your jog.

    Just take it easy and listen to your body.

    PS:: i wish i was 10 stone something lol. Its been a LONG time since i was sub 14 stone

    Well done on the weight loss. When you say you do a 5k walk/jog does that mean you walk some of the way and then jog some of the way. My advice would be, instead of aiming to do 10k, aim to do 5k non stop jogging first. Once your body gets used to it it will get easier and you will enjoy it even more and you will see the pounds drop even more. Keep up the good work.

    Congratulations sounds like you are doing really well. Personally I think rest days are important for continuing motivation. It makes it easier to go harder on your "work" days when you know you have your rest days to relax/recharge. Sounds like motivation is not a problem for you just make sure you get right back into it after your rest days and not let it drift. You dont mention diet at all refer to the stickies for some great tips/ advice on this. Best of luck

    I'd agree with teh advice above, try and build to the point where you are running all the way rather than run / walking and then pick a 10k program (like this one) to progress.

    But you do need rest days. It's not simply about relaxing and mentally recharging it is actually a vital part of the training process. Simplistic explanation - when you train you put your muscles under stress and this causes damage to them. When they are repaired they are repaired to a higher level, made stronger (theory of supercompensation) and this is where you make your gains in fitness. So recovery is absolutely vital.

    But you can still train on rest days - active rest / recovery is great as is working a different set of muscles.
