Buying a Civic VTI

    Howya,

Im interested in buying the ek4 Civic Vti, those 1.6 dohc vtecs, and I jst have a few questions to ask before I really buy one. I'm 19, and am heading back to college after summer. I'm saving my ass of at the moment to afford one, and the down payment on the insurance. I just passed my full license in April, and I got a quote with 123.ie of €1,700 for the year on my Mams policy, and thats around €125 or so a month. 123 are the only company who gave me a decent online quote, anyone have any other decent insurance companies in mind?

Anyone have any tips on what to look for when buying, and checking out the car, like I understand that the CV joints are a problem in Hondas, and to make sure theres no smoke on Vtec, but anything else I should keep in mind? And also, anyone have past experience of what its like running a car like this while balancing college with a job paying around €150 a week!?

Appreciate all advice that anyone has. Thanks.

I drove my Integra Type R to college, 40 mile round trip a day, and I only had about €80 a week so you should be fine with the VTI and €150 a week!

Cheers, that makes me feel alot better now! Was worried about the running costs alright.

Anyone have anything I should look out for, any common problems with these Hondas?

As with all Honda engines that have been serviced on time and generally maintained it should be bulletproof. Just look for the usual wear and tear signs and check if the timing belt has been done when/if due.

I was insured on a Fiesta with Quinn last year, on provisional. But I had to let the Fiesta go, and I think I still owe them €50 for a cancellation fee, but they havn't sent me a bill...and its been 6 months or so! And as this is a high performance car, and that I'v no NCB, they will not give me an online quote. And I'v heard stories about them being c*nts not paying out compensation and that, so I kinda want to steer clear of them!

i had a vti a few years ago. absolutely fantastic car, couldnt fault it in anyway at all, it was a 96 with over 120k miles on the clock when i sold it. petrol wise i found it fairly good considering the fun you can have in it.:D
best of luck with your search:)

Yeah, they really are a fantastic car. Brilliant engine, and I can't wait to get my hands on it! I'm in love with the b16a2! If all goes well I plan to drive this car for around 2 years, and I can imagine it wont miss a beat (touch wood). I wouldnt mind putting a few quid into it, dropping it, alloys, new exhaust, breaks etc.

Thanks for the advice lads and lassies, I'll let you know how I get on in my search! :)

Well the Sir is rated as being more powerful but on our petrol its barely noticeable, the VTI will be much easier to insure too
