The head gaskets tend to go and the head cracks. Spare parts are expensive. The gearbox gives trouble at 160k or after. Older pajeros had a problem with 5th gear. The older ones pre 98 are not worth €3k. I saw a 04 pajero advertised lately for €4k.

my father got offered €6k on a trade in for a 2006 swb pajero. Apart from that he likes it but it is hard on diesel.

I have a 2004 SWB and in general I am very happy with it. That said, I will NEVER again buy a SWB jeep. They have no carrying capacity in the back and are that bit more bouncy on the road. Annoyingly, in the case of the Pajero, the SWB also has a smaller fuel tank than the LWB. Plus, if you ever wanted to convert it to a passenger model down the line, a SWB is useless.
Mine has been reliable since I've owned it and I have driven the living hole off it. I didn't have to spend a penny on it yet for a DOE test, but I did replace the front brake discs last year. They were probably warped due to my own driving style. If you're going for the 2000-on model, avoid the 2.5 litre engine. It's a slow, noisy disappointment.
