Where to take my mammy for her holidays?

Myself (23) and my Mum (53) have gone on holidays together for the past 3 years running. We go at the beginning of September as it's the only time that suits us both. So far we've been to Lanzarote, Tenerife and Zakynthos. Of these, I think Zakynthos was our favourite although it was still tack-tastic! We've always gone last minute before and taken a cheap package deal, but this year we're doing some forward planning and hoping to get somewhere a little nicer.

I'd like somewhere quiet, a couple of nice restaurants and maybe a bar is all we'd need. Preferably somewhere without food pictures and neon lights. A nice beach within walking distance is essential as my mum is a complete water baby. Last time we hired bikes for the week and went off exploring in the mornings and evenings, it'd be nice to do this again.

I think we'd like to stay in the one place and maybe hire a car for our excursions, though I wouldn't be averse to moving half way through our holiday. It has to be somewhere you can fly to direct from Ireland, it's only a week so we don't want the hassle of connecting flights.

Hotels are out, apartments are in.

I'm looking at Sicily and Sardinia at the moment, though I think Sardinia has a slight edge as Sicily seems to be quite over touristy. Any thoughts on these or other places I haven't thought of? Suggestions of resorts/towns/villages would be hugely appreciated. Cheers :)

If you want to live up to your username, may I suggest Fuerteventura ? Outside the towns, ALL beaches are clothing optional.

El Cotillo on the north West of the Island is a quiet little fishing village that hasn't yet been spoiled.

If that is not available, Corralejo is the main tourist centre in the north of the island and Jandia is in the south.

Ryanair don't fly to Fuer any more, but the main package companies do.

Madeira might be worth a look as well.

What about Alghero, Sardinia? - it's easy to get to - Ryanair fly there.

It's a traditional Italian holiday town with a lovely coastline and beaches and great old town - lots of winding streets (stay in the old town not in the tourist bit). Perfect size for exploring, doesn't feel too touristy. Really really good food, Lots of lovely vantage points for sipping cava.

We rented an an apartment in the old town and it was all perfect!

I'm actually just about to book flights to Alghero :) Do you remember who you booked through or even better, what was the name of the apartment you stayed in?

    Thanks!

The flights were with Ryanair direct to Alghero from Dublin.

The apartment was with http://www.algherorelax.info/ - we liked the look of the one advertised here but it was full so she recomended her friend Angela's apartment (also very central) and we went for that - it was I think about €450 for the week (2 years ago).

They both taught at a local lauguage school - which looked nice http://www.pintadera.info/ - but we never took a course.

Food is great - we just wandered down the smaller side streets and stumbled across some gems. Lots of seafood and lots of procecco...

    Enjoy your trip!

We went to Sardinia for 10 days last year and loved it. We stayed in a small resort town in the north called Baia Sardinia and then in Alghero.

We booked the flights on Ryanair and our accomodation in Alghero through Justsardinia.co.uk
