    Hi,

    I have booked my flights and hotels for Cairo, Luxor and Sharm El Sheikh but someone I know who was there recently has said that as a tourist in Egypt you have to be part of some package or tour group and travel under armed guard convoy around the place as part of some tourist protection act or something.

    Has anyone here done the DIY Egypt holiday and had any problems? any advise?

    Thats completely untrue.
    Your friend doesn't know what they are talking about and was fed false information.

    thats a load of rubbish. We went on a diy to sharm el sheikh and did a day trip up to cairo too. Fly up in the morning and back to sharm that night.
    We booked an egyptian guide who met us at airport and showed us All of cairo incl pyramids, sphynx, museum, cruise on nile etc. transport was an air-con mini van for just the 3 of us. Total cost was something like 90 USD for full day.

    btw the guide was a fully qualified egyptologist. Amazing history and stories etc. Defo do this trip.
