So, I have a MTB, a Giant Terrago Disc, from 07 that I use for a 7 mile commute, mostly downhill in and mostly uphill out (obviously!), the last bit uphill is VERY uphill. Changed the MTB tyres to Continental slicks for road use. Would a change of bike to a proper hybrid such as the Lapierre RCR 500 make a noticeable difference? And if so in what way?

The MTB is quite heavy, does the few kgs in weight make that much difference, considering I'm 85kg does a 5kg reduction in bike weight really matter, only 5% or so of the total bike/rider package?

yes it will make it much easier. bigger wheels, lighter bike, no suspension sapping your power.

I cycled my mountain bike from my house to Djouce last weekend thinking the 15km trek would be a cakewalk!

How wrong I was...going up the same roads I do on the road bike took a lot of effort, I mean I was really spinning my legs, huffing and puffing and going nowhere fast.

I hoped to make up some time on the flats and downhills, no joy there...my 1.95 tyres ensured that I had the rolling resistance of a steamroller through treacle.

My friend has an RCR 500, lovely bike, mostly road groupset if I recall (105 or tiagra right?), thin tyres, more aggressive position, etc. For me it is not just the speed but the effort required to get the thing going that would help most, a mountain bike just takes a lot more effort on the road.
