    Hi everyone.

so we have an opel astra 98 - 110,000 miles so got a good use out of it.

We think the clutch is gone - it's not going into gear and we can't move it.

Does anyone know how much it would cost to replace? Like how much does it vary from parts - entire new clutch?

Also if it's too much, how would you go about getting rid of it? Would anyone buy it for scrap? We won't be buying another car if this one is gone - can't afford it.

    Help!
    Thanks

Some people dont think the loss of a clutch is a serious problem!

Ring NK clutches in Glasnevin. They are usaully cheap enough for clutches. No point in guessing how much until you ring them.Ring aorund a few places to compare prices. If in Dublin (northside try Consort).
With regards to fitting prices vary wildly from garage to garage.
If you tell us where you are someone, I am sure, will recommend a garage near you.I certainly wouldnt give up on your car just because your clutch has gone.

Mr Gearbox/Mr Clutch in Finglas do a good job at a very competitive price, mine was €350

    Thanks guys. We're in dundrum.

I'm thinking of selling it and trying to get 500 quid for it?

Dont think its worth putting €300-€400 into a car if your gona sell it for €500.

if moneys tight your probaly better getting rid of it sooner rather than later before other things can go wrong.

    just my 2 cents worth:D

Yea that's my thinking Chef. Do you think we'd get 500 quid for a 98 opel astra with the clutch (or a part of the clutch) not working?

Dont think so you would be lucky to get that money if it was driving but you never know it might only be the cable gone? is the clutch pedal stuck to the floor or is it loose?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,897 ✭✭✭Kimia

No it's loose it's just not going into gear so it could be simple enough - that's what i'm hoping anyway.

It's just too much hassle and we can't afford to get a new one so it's better on to be done with it.

I may try 500 and see what happens. I see other people putting their cars up (same year, same mileage) for 1200? And our car is nct'd up to 2010.

Hi, sorry to bump this but I didn't want to put another thread in on the same topic.

Can anyone give us some advice on what the problem could be?

Basically, the car was starting fine, but just wouldn't go into gear. Now it's not starting at all.

We don't want to sell it yet in case it's a simple thing so does anyone have a list of things it could possibly be and I can find out how much they would cost to fix?

    Thanks

There are a multitude of reasons why a car wouldn't start - we'd only be giving you wild guesses. I take it there's fuel in it and the battery's not flat? If so, you really need to have a mechanic look at it.

    Thanks for the reply.

I know that - what I'm wondering is how much a clutch problem would cost because the problem mainly seems to be not getting into gear.

    For example:

    Clutch - €500
    Gearbox €?

Is there valves or parts of the clutch and gearbox that could cause this problem?

If you tell us the make, model & year of the car, someone might be able to give you an estimate to replace the clutch, if that's your problem.

this happened to a friend of a friend, he has the same car and his car was refusin to go into gear, car being under warranty, brought it back, and they changed the box. but didnt fix the problem, so he dont know where the issue lies

Apologies for semi-hijacking this thread but:

I have the exact same car as the OP except it's a 99 reg. I have a problem very similar to this but I can still put the car into gear and it still runs. The only thing is that the car has problems climbing steep hills and when I accelerate hard the rev meter goes up and down as if it's slipping. Do ye think this is definitely a clutch problem or could it be a gearbox problem too?

Thanks again and apologies for hijacking.

Sounds like your clutch is slipping, i'd replace it now before it lets go completely.

    Hi Anan,

    It's a 98 Opel Astra with 110,000 miles.

    Basically my question is this:

Is it worth our while to fix it (if it is the entire clutch) and then sell it on, or is it better to sell now at a much lower price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,893 ✭✭✭allthedoyles

Im am not a mechanic , but it may only be the clutch cable needs replacing .................an cheap enough job.................or it could be the full clutch and pressure plate ..................maybe around 400 euro .............

You asked about selling the car for scrap ........................Molloy Metals Ltd in Enniscorthy pay around € 70 euro per tonne for scrap cars .

My advice is dont feel desperate enough to scrap car for sake of small repair. If its an economical and roadworthy car , keep it .

To be perfectly honest, Kimia, its worth diddly squat.
The only thing you could do it take it to a mechanic, get him to tell you whats wrong with, how much he'd charge, and then you'll be able to make a decision.
It could be a couple of different things, so different prices to fix. Cable < clutch.
