Thailand Visa

So I booked a flight to Thailand from Australia and a return flight 80 days later. I am leaving in 3 weeks but don't have a visa. The results online seem to contradict themselves with one website saying I am ok to enter for up to 90 days and others saying I can only stay 30 days. If asked why I have a return flight 80 days later when my visa only lasts 30 days could I simply say I plan to travel to other countries after 3 weeks in Thailand and simply return to Thailand at the end of my trip to fly out??

Yes that is perfectly acceptable, it is 30 day visa, when you leave and return you'll get another 30 day visa.

Just make sure you don't over stay, Thailand can be strict in some cases over visas.

    taken from this website http://news.farangthai.com.au/articles/3/1/Visa-Options-for-Australians-Visiting-Thailand/Page1.html
Australians along with with citizens from 43 other countries have an exemption from the Tourist Visa entry requirements. This means we can go to Thailand as tourists without a visa so long as our trip doesn't exceed 30 days per visit.

If you want to stay beyond 30 days as a tourist, you can re-enter for a further 30 days with a limit of 90 days maximum within a 6 month period from the first day you entered the Kingdom.

Ah good I wasn't sure because some websites said there are reports of Irish being refused entry because their return flight exceeds 30 days! Would I need proof of travel to a neighbouring country though?

No, as a lot of neighbouring countries have land borders and the officials are aware of this, so proof would be pretty hard

the main thing is your flight out!

Hmmmm, technically you do need proof of an onward flight but it's rarely enforced.

The one place I ever got hassle was leaving Australia on my way to Bangkok as the airline are supposed to enforce the rule too. Luckily I had a Visa that time so I'm not sure what have happened otherwise.

Also, you now only get 15 days visa exemption when you arrive into Thailand by land so you'd have to take this into account.
