Hi all, I'm heading to Scotland this summer with mates for a weekend and have been gathering a bit of sterling off mates/family etc.
Some of the notes I have state Baml of England and others Bank of Ireland!
Does this matter? Is it going to be a problem? I wonder would I have to bring it all into a bank and change it for whatever I am supposed to have.
    Thanks.

The Bank of Ireland notes will be a problem for you.

I had awful trouble with these in the UK. They could not believe that an Irish bank could print British money. Most of it was ignorance to the fact Northern Ireland was actually a member of Great Britain.

If possible see if you can get these changed in the bank. You are better safe than sorry for an easy life.

Actually, if its just Scotland you're heading to I dont think you should have too much of a problem, they have lots of variations on their notes. Some places in England wont accept Scottish notes even.

If you're going to Scotland, you're fine.

In England you would have a problem with notes that are not Bank of England notes, but the would take them in your Asda's and Tesco's generally (in England).

This does not apply to Scotland however, and they will take Sterling notes printed by the banks (Including Irish Banks) there without question.

    Hi,

Neither Scottish , nor Northern Irish notes are legal tender in England or Wales.

However I believe a private members bill is being put through to make Scottish notes legal tender , not sure about NI notes though.

However , any bank will take them and change them up

Most of the large retailers will take Scottish notes , but virtually no one will take NI notes . Scottish notes are more common , therefore the shops may recognise them. Put yourself in their place , someone produces a note you have never seen and says it's legal , would you accept it ?

To the OP , sorry I haven't been to Scotland in years , however I do know they will take English notes no problem , the NI notes may be a problem.

    To Berty,
Most of it was ignorance to the fact Northern Ireland was actually a member of Great Britain.

To be totally pedantic , NI is NOT in Great Britain. The UK is the United Kingdom of Great Britain AND Northern Ireland .

I regularly use N.I notes in Scotland. I'm here now. Not a problem.

3 Scottish banks print their own sterling, plus the English money, and variations for Channel Island Sterlinng / NI Sterling.....Its more of a problem going to England.
There's so many NI people over here - students etc - that NI sterling is no problem ... even the funny plastic fivers...

I used BOI sterling in North England and Wales. Anybody I asked said it is ok as long as it says Sterling on the notes

Yep that was what I was told when I worked in a shop in England. We accepted notes from Scotland and NI with sterling on.
