Okay so going unreg for this.

Im 27 and have suffered from this all my life. I was a pretty overweight kid and lost alot of weight in my teens mostly from doing sports. When I was 18 I was the thinnest I have been in my life with around a 32 inch waist. My weight has gone up and down over the years ranging from a 32 inch to 38 inch waist. However one constant has been my chest. I have a pretty impressive set of tits. Im a bloke just to clarify by the way, 6 foot tall and lead an active life. Playing football at least twice a week and live a weightwatchers life as I do put weight on easily. I currently have a 34 inch waist with a 44 inch chest. Im sick of having to buy xxl shirts just so they can fit around my chest. I would get suggery if I could afford it but I can't so thats out. Anybody else suffer from this and find some exercise that helps reduce the weight im carrying on my chest? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I guess I would like to leave it in PI as I want to know how other people with the same problem have get through their life with it.

Cut out beer altogether, or alcohol for that matter.

Get some chest exercises in, you'll see a big difference.

Hey there.I have known a couple of guys with this issue. You already know the obvious one - diet. That is watch and seriously curtail the fatty foods;beer not good either(or at least too much of it). Some guys are a bit more susceptible than others.A very good form of exercise to keep it in check and keep your trunk toned is the inverted breaststroke. This swimming forces your arms to work under the water and has more of an effect in strengthening the upper back muscles and shoulders and as a consquence the chest area tightens and your posture can improve as well. You need to do a good half hour three times a week.

Surgery is pretty drastic and I would try everything else first.Diet and exercise.Sounds like the old cliche but theres no getting away from it!

Thanks for the advice. I have been suffering with this since before drink ever reared its beautiful head in my life and I don't think that much but I'll happily cut it out of my life if it helps. I commute long hours to and from work and was hoping I could avoid the gym and just concentrate on running and football after work to get in better shape. I am quite fit in regards to how long I can run for and what pace i can keep. But my fitness level just doesn't seem to match itself with my body.

I would hate to suggest losing more weight if you are at a healthy weight now
    but...

you can't spot reduce, i.e. lose weight from only one part of your body. Do you think you have more weight to lose. What is your BMI (I'm not a big believer in BMI but it's the easiest way over the interet)?

    BMI Calculator

Failing that, do as others have suggested - work on your chest muscles. Push-ups are some of the best exercises to do for chest muscles. Try this site
    One Hundred Push Ups
It offers a free training program that allows you to build up the amount of push-ups you can do to 100 (in about 5/6 weeks).

    Good luck!

This is why press ups will not fix the problem. civildefence, you have no idea what you're talking about.

How dare you, I've been there and lost it same as the OP's scenario so yes it worked for me.

Press Ups will help build the chest muscles, so, even if bodyfat isnt reduced, the chest will be tighter/better shaped, from the inside

It's you who doesnt know what you're talkin about

    Don't worry, you're not wrong.

The point of push-ups is to build muscles around the chest, not to lose fat around the chest.

OP, you will get good results by combining push-ups with weight loss (good diet, plenty of exercise etc.).

Makes sense to me. Even if you dont get rid of the moob fat it will be stretched across the face of your pectoralis if they are bulked up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,560 ✭✭✭DublinWriter

OP - you may have a combination of fat and gland tissue, in which case no amount of exercise will help.

I don't want to breach the charter and give out medical advice, but google a condition called 'gynecamastia' and take it from there.

I'm saying this to you because I wrote an article a number of years back about it and it's shocking the number of Irish GP's who are completely ignorant about this condition and who basically tell their male patients to get more exercise.

In the UK, surgery for Gynecamastia can be covered by the NHS.

Bingo - but the OP's problem was not that he has underdeveloped chest muscles but that he had excess fat around that area!

Sure they will but in this situation, they're only going to be of marginal benefit to how his chest looks on the outside. Fat loss is key here. The post by civildefence suggested that push ups were the answer to this problem in the same way that those ab cruncher machines sold on QVC promise to give you a trim waist. You can could have incredibly tight well developed abdominal muscles but you ain't going to see that 6 pack if there is a big layer of fat over it. Why would the chest be any different?
How dare you, I've been there and lost it same as the OP's scenario so yes it worked for me.

I'm very curious as to what exactly worked for you. Why doing you give us an idea of what your exercise regime/diet was like?

OP, I would take Dublinwriters advise and research what he is talking about.

You will be amazed to know you are not alone, plenty of men suffer from the same condition

    Best of luck

Being a former page 3 man, I started going to the gym regularly (as well as changing my diet) and focused on building up my chest muscles. I did this by using the pec-dec, seated bench press and doing free weight bench presses moreso than the other exercises, In the evening I would do press ups, building up the reps week by week. 6 months later my chest had toned up significantly, my chest is now 3 inches smaller and my moobs are no more. By the way, this was the advice given to me by my doctor and gym instructors.

    hi,

i had the same problem for years, i know exactly how you feel. not been able go to the beach etc. i know exactly how you feel now i was in your poistion before. Many of the posters on here think its beer/diet or gym work will fix it however more than likely thats not the case its probably gynecomastia Do your nipples look puffy? that is due to a gland behind the nipple this is one of the root causes many surgery options dont cover taking out this gland but it really needs to be done as well for it to be a success.

anyway i had the surgery done and to put it midly it was the best thing i ever did, ok there was the inital embarsement going to consulations etc but believe me it was worth it it changed my life so much.

I thought that gym work would solve the problem to such an extent that my body was in great shape little to no fat and massive arms and back and shoulders from all the upper body work the first day i went and bought a tight t shirt made it all worth while no more slouching the shoulders.

Anyway i did a lot of reseach on www.gynecomastia.org before i picked a surgeon its cost $5000 all up and was hassle free was out that afternoon 2 days of rest followed by 6 weeks of wearing a compression vest (no one will notice) and it was all over. I did it without telling anyone told everyone i was going away for 3 days and booked into a hotel next to hospital.

Now many people on here and other websites will tell you its all about loosing weight and diet etc which may be true but in so many cases its gynecomastia which sounds like your case (reasonably fit and not too overweight)

the website is very helpful and there are loads of people to talk to about it on it if only i could show you my before and after pictures, i reconsidered thinking it was a waste of money but to be honest looking back it was the best $5k i ever spent nothing could match the confidence boost it gave me. some health insurance schemes cover it as well as it is a medical condition dont just brush it off as overwight or more gym work if you have the condition no amount of gym work/diet will fix it

i'm the poster its not spam, why would i write such a long piece if it was. i dont refer to any hospital or surgeon i suffered with this for years many people wrote it off as diet etc if you saw the condition (v.v low body fat %) i was in (moobs aside) before the surergy you would know it was not diet. I used the $ sign as i now live overseas and i dont have a euro symbol on my keyboard, i'm the only person that has been thru it all that replied and you call it spam.

Take my advice go for a consulation with a recommended surgeon please note i'm not naming anyone in particular and take it from there, yes it may be diet but it more than likely it is gynecomstia.

Not all GP's actually know a lot about it and some dismiss it completely but a lot do and my be able recommend someone, if some GP's dont know about it your average person is more likely to dismiss it as diet etc, if you research it you'll find out the condition isnt all that rare at all.

I totally agree that a proper diet is paramount, but I see little point in going on a diet to get rid of chest fat if its not combined with muscle toning and cardio exercise

just thought of something - How long are you at this? That amount of exercise should be fine! If you're just starting, results can take more AND less time to appear. You'll get spurts of improvement and then nothing for a while.

Whatever you're doing, don't over do it. You don't want any injuries.

Keep it up though - fair play!

Started that 100pushups thing on sunday, just about managed to eek out 3 of them for the initial test . But it actually feels like I did a load of chest presses in the gym or something, for the last 2 days ive been in pain... Is that normal? How could 3 pushups possibly do that to me.

Is that gynecomastia thing really that expensive here? Surely it should be free if its a recognised medical condition??? Although I am pretty unfit, I lose weight really quickly if i dont eat alot and do excersise for a couple of days, ive lost the best part of half a stone since the weekend pretty much through playing soccer and running around every day. While ive pretty much lost the majority of my belly since saturday my moobs remain unchanged. Gonna stick with that 100 pushups thing anyway (needs to be done) but I really think I may have it...

If you can only do 3 pushups then I'd hold off on looking at surgery to be honest
