I just had a quick look on komplett for a few prices.

3 I would consider would be:
    Optoma HD700X €560
    Optoma HD65 €700
    Panasonic PT-AX200 €900

All these are 720p, and cheapest is 1300 ANSI lumens with 3000:1 contrast ranging to the ax200 with 2000 ANSI and 6000:1 contrast. There are good reports about all these projectors and the HD700X does look like good value. The 2 Optomas are DLP while the Panasonic is LCD, both with advantages and disadvantages. You may find cheaper prices by shopping around.
I only have experience with Panasonic projectors, which has been a great experience so far.

There have also been a few problems with the above models, some Optomas have bulb problems after about 200 hours where it flickers, and the Panasonics have a problem with the iris after about 500-800 hours. I'm not too sure about a fix for the Optomas but it would be under warranty so they would probably change the bulb. A quick fix for the Panasonic iris problem is with some WD40 and a cotton bud tip(see here). Of course the Panasonic would also be under warrenty so they would replace the iris.

There are a few things to consider, distance projector will be from viewing wall will be the main factor as to size of picture. How bright is the room and can most of the light be blocked out with curtains? The brighter the room the more lumens you will need, such as the ax200 with 2000 ANSI lumens.

AVForums.com is a good place to start research, lots of good advice there.

Well you're going to need a screen no bigger than 2m wide obviously. i think that's the smallest you can get.

Some of the wide screens are up to 3m wide
