I wish I still had a SD Tv to play it on becasue it looks poor (naturally on a HD set). It is very bright isn't it? ICO felt more polished (but then again I played ICO on a SD tv and ICO didn't have such asprawling enviornment).

Anyway, the music is outstanding. The way it changes the moment you have discovered how to get onto an individual colossus is amazing.

4 down so far (surprisingly quickly) and onwards I go.

EDIT: Camera takes bit of getting used to.

Some of the later colossus are crazy hard, took me ages to find the weakspots.

I'd say ico was more polished because shadow of the colossus is jus so huge inscale compared to it.

Oh also that game nearly made me cry due to some "strange" emotion that wasn't anger. damn I wish I never pawned that off, must go buy again soon.

I've still got both those games (the only remaining ones from the PS2) and I thought that they both still looked good on the lcd tv, obviously not as good as the sd tv though.

I really should dust off my PS2 which has been sitting under my bed since er,... for a long time now. I have both games, completed ICO, but never did get round to completing SOK. I did get to about the 6th or 7th Colossus before I had to move house. I never did hook the PS2 back up after having bought a PS3 last summer.

when I gave my ps2 to my little brother after i bought a PS3, this was the only game I kept. Absolutely amazing stuff. Might look into getting a cheap second hand ps2 (stupid 40 gig ps3) to play it again.

The game suffers because it pushes the PS2 a little too hard. I've heard people saying it's a next gen game on last gen hardware. The framerate can be dreadful at times but I still think it's a gorgeous game on account of the stunning art work.

I agree with the frame rate issues, but you can accept it by what the game represents over all. Would love to see if ported to the current gen consoles.

One of my favourite games. The journeys to each collossus force you to go through some pretty amazing landscapes. And some of the boss battles are amazing.

If you're into games development heres a really interesting article on some of the techniques and algorithms they used:

Thanks for that, absolutely fascinating. I wonder will they push the PS3 in similar ways when their third game is released.

    Cheers, no problem.

No doubt they will, they have a very talented team there. I don't think they sleep much though!

Okay so I finished this (pretty much, actually got really frustrated on the last boss and just youtubed the ending).

Its definitely a good game and certainly pushes the artistic point of games but it is certainly flawed.

I won't moan about the graphics too much because they were really spreading themselves thin with such an expansive world.

However I would defo complain about
the number of Colossi, 16 was about 6 too many for me becasue so many of them were similar

The camera is also wonky as **** IMO, it can be so difficult to to ascertain your projected direction from a jump from a hanging position. The controls when you are on the horse are a bit frustrating as well, I mean they may well be realistic in that the horse can't take sharp turns but whether or not all elements of realism are welcome in video games is a moot point.

Some of the Colossi require quite neat techniques to be beaten but this is kind o cheapened byt the fact the fact you have to jump up on the colossus in question 3 or 4 times once you have figured out said technique. My point being the game is artifically lengthened by making the Colossus force you off once you have figured out his weakness.

Anyway, enough bitching. The game is extremely evocative, even without saying too much (like ICO). The perfect example
would be the 'death' of the horse, some may argue it was a little cheap (with some justification) but the unspoken bond between man and animal for the entire game gradually built itself up without any grand moments or gestures and you genuinely feel awful being helpless as the horse falls.

The music is excellent, for me it is definitely somewhere where it beats ICO. The change of musical pace when you actually mount a Colossus is excellent. Holding onto one of the beasts for dear life as you are being thrown and shaken around is made all the more epic with the score playing in the background.

I didn't think as much of the ending as other seem to
personally I preferred ICO'S. I, I guess we all did, knew that killing the Colossi was somehow the wrong thing to do. May have just been the evil sound of the voice barking the orders at you. You always knew things would end badly. I am a bit late to the party speculation-wise but someone pointed out to me that people reckon the baby may be the boy from ICO or a descendent. Any theories floating about on where the baby came from?

what a great game, i personally preferred SOTC as it just had a lot more action but the exploration to each colossi was also very enjoyable. just 16 colossi, no flab like stupid mini-games, perfect!
