Phosphatidyl Serine?

    I have heard that something called Phosphatidyl Serine is good for your brain, vitamins for your brain basically. Does anyone take it, can you get it here in Ireland? Is it expensive?

    What else is good for your brain? I'd heard that Ginkgo Biloba was? What about Omega3 Fish Oils?

    I'll be very honest with you here, for most people a good diet containing a good amount of protein and oily fish is enough to keep the brain ticking over. Reading and doing puzzles are also good 'exercise' for the brain.

    One review of phosphatidylserine (PTS) use in exercising humans shows that the effects of supplementation and the dose required varies between people.

    To be honest, the research is quite sketchy, there hasn't been enough of it and the number of people used in each study has been insufficient to allow effective statistical analysis (The studies can't be powered for significance).

    This is the case for many supplements on the market today. There is anecdotal evidence for some and absolutely none for others. PTS is used in combination with other fish oils to modify behaviour in those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder but that's something only a doctor can advise about.

    Honestly, if you want to improve your brain power then eat good protein, oily fish (Tuna, sardines, mackerel), cut out junk food and beer and do a few crosswords, sudoku and jigsaw puzzles :)

    Ah, I HATE crosswords and puzzles! HATE! :) My wife loves them, the very moment I even see one I get a headache, lol. We don't eat much oily fish, tinned tuna from time to time but seldom. We luckily very seldom eat junk food or drink beer. In fact I heard red wine can be good for you but then I heard it can be bad for you too, lol. Think red wine reduces your risk of heart disease but increases your risk or Parkinsons or Alzheimers (can't remember which......no pun intended :rolleyes:)
