    For people not going the Skype route, 3 Italy have a pre-pay service offering that allows Irish people to avail of the following tariffs;

    - Call Italian fixed phones, unlimited duration for 21.2 cent per call.
    - Call Italian '3' mobile phones, unlimited duration for 21.2 cent per call.
    - Call other Italian mobile phones for 21.2 cent per call plus 15 cent per minute.

    The tariffs are available in Ireland thanks to the 3 Italy 'Roam Like Home' service offering.

    I've been using these 3 Italy services to make international calls using an Italian VOIP provider (Geophonia). Combining the 3 Italy services with the Geophonia service allows me to make cheap calls from my mobile to destinations all over the world.

    The catches are;

    1. To avail of the 3 Italy 'Roam Like Home' service you must roam on the 3 Ireland network.

    2. The 3 Italy 'Roam Like Home' service ends on 30th June 2009.

    3. You'll need a 3G compatible phone to roam on the 3 Ireland network.

    4. It may be difficult to get a 3 Italy SIM (not available on e-bay).

    5. 3 Italy have a 1000 minutes per month 'fair usage' policy.

    13434.ie

    From an irish mobile:
    italy (land lines) 0.5 cent per min
    italy (mobile) 15 cent per min

    A 5 cent connection fee applies to all calls. Once registered online the service takes a few seconds to make the call. They also offer cheap rates to most countries worldwide from mobiles and from your landline phone.

    13434 are great although they don't include the cost of calling their local number exchange:

    If you've inclusive landline calls with your mobile operator (ie. on a billpay plan) than it's a great deal.

    Or free calls on a landline which a large amount of the packages have.

    Hmm interesting. I want to call a 01858 number in the UK. I have free unlimited national & local calls off-peak with my Eircom landline. Would I be right that I would only be charged 1c a minute and a 5c connection fee?

    Im not very familiar with uk numbers, is 01858 a standard landline number?

    They do tell you the rate before the call is connected so that would confirm it for you. You can listen it on the website, bottom right corner.

  • Just signed up and tried the UK number I want to ring. Didn't get any message telling me how much it might cost. Sounded like it got cut off. I got put straight through to the number:mad: tried it twice.

    edit:: Got charged 6c for each call? Strange as a 6c per minute call charge isn't listed on any of the uk call rate options?

    ye, that should play the tarrif message. It does state it may take 30 minutes for the site to be updated to play the message. I see you said you got charged 6 cent, well 5 cent connection charge, plus 1 cent for the first minute makes sense.

    Ah yes!! I forgot about the 5c connection charge. :o So it's 1c a minute after all. I thought they were charging 6c a min :o:rolleyes: Silly me. Thanks for posting about it Davy :)

    Yeah I found they still play the tariff message even if you tick to say you don't want it. Still good value though.

    I've tried call13434 in the past; their call quality is fairly poor. The 3 Italy service doesn't use any VOIP technolgy so the call quality is very good.

    Also you didn't add in the cost of the call from a mobile to the call13434 access number when you quoted the cost of the calls to Italy. Most operators in Ireland are charging of the order of 20-30c per minute for calls to the call13434 access number (fixed line destination).
