HD Ready/Full HD and LCD/Plasma for SD TV (and my mum)?

I need to get a TV for my mom and I'd appreciate a few quick opinions on the following.

The TV will be used for DVDs and SD analogue TV mostly and occassional gaming. Picture quality is obviously not a huge deal but I want to find something that strikes a reasonably decent balance between value and quality.

I know these questions have been asked over and over but I'm struggling slightly with the classic 720 vs 1080 and the LCD/Plasma debate.

The following TVs are all roughly the same price but offer various combinations of these. If a 1080 TV is the same(ish) price as a 720 panel is there any reason to go 720 if the source is essentially crap? Will SD analogue look better on a 32" 720 panel than on a 32" 1080 after scaling?

    Here are some examples:

Full HD 32" Samsung LCD €539

    Same, LG - €569

Then a 32" HD Ready Samsung LCD is €429

And then, just to totally confuse me, here is a larger 42" Samsung plasma panel that's HD Ready. €546

So prices are all fairly similar but there are various combinations of LCD/Plasma and 1080/720.

Any advice bearing in mind the intended use?

    Thanks!

It is unlikely you will see much benefit from a 32" HD unless you will be sitting very close to it.

Theres a chart in this thread you should look at:http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055552947

I understand that you might not see the benefit of higher res. But could it be worse to go for Full HD if the signal is analgoue SD TV?

doubt it'd be worse because the 1080p scaler will probably be of sufficient quality to handle it.

I dont think the HD Ready vs the Full HD is very important for you

Far more important is Plasma vs LCD

I watch a fair amount of SD material - and have yet to see a sd signal displayed on a LCD i like. Its my own personal opinion but they Aaways look too soft or too smudgy - or have ghosting

My brother got a top of the range bravia recently - and while blue rays look great - normal sky looks really bad -! its a 40"

I have always gone the plasma route. Currently have a 50" pioneer plasma and SD looks fine on it.

If your mother is going from crt to lcd - she might end up very diapointed in the picture.

But like everything else it depends on the TV
