Is there such a thing or are they universally horrible tinny affairs, is there any laptop out there that you could actually listen to music on or watch a full movie without headphones, I'm just curious.

It really depends on your priorities, if good speakers are one of them then usually the larger machines will have better speakers. I do say "usually" as it's not universally true. If you want good sound it could be worth your while buying external speakers. Not quite as handy though.
Do you have a budget, or any idea what else you want/need from your laptop?

I must say I saw this monstrosity of an 18" thing on display at PC World recently with built in "sub woofer" was coated in carbon fibre FFS

Some of the Toshibas have fantastic sound (relatively speaking). Look for the ones with Harmon Kardon speakers, especially the larger 17" models.
