External harddrive problem

Hi, I know it might be a goner but I have an external harddrive. I was using it to download directly as the file was too big for laptop harddrive. Anyway I unplugged it without safely removing it. Now when I plug in the USB it comes on but the computer doesn't recognise it. It seems to whir and the light fades in and out…

Hi,
I know it might be a goner but I have an external harddrive. I was using it to download directly as the file was too big for laptop harddrive. Anyway I unplugged it without safely removing it. Now when I plug in the USB it comes on but the computer doesn't recognise it. It seems to whir and the light fades in and out as it used to when it was in use. Also then when I unplug the USB it doesn't power off like it used to and I have to plug it out.
Any ideas on how to get it back working or should I forget about it. It has loads of movie and TV and some photos which although isn't essential would like to get back.
