Laptop powers on, but monitor dead - opinions

Hi lads and lasses,

I have a Targa Traveller 1776 Notebook

Since yesterday, it will power on as normal, make the usual sounds etc, but will not show anything on the Monitor/Screen

I have tried redirecting the screen output to my work monitor, but no joy.

Looking at internet forms, it may well be a motherboard issue

Can you offer me some "Idiots Guide to"-sytle troubleshooting because i know feck about hardware

Couple of things, there may be a Keyboard combo to switch to VGA output on the keyboard , generally FN+one of the F1-10 buttons up top. Try those and see does it switch to VGA out. Also check is there a disable the LCD option as some laptops have this stupid function aslo. Otherwise it sounds like the backlight could be gone on the screen, check very closely and make sure you can't faintly see your desktop on the LCD, if so it's a more complicated thing to fix.
