Check out this blog for a new pub on Barrack Street: An Réalt Dearg(the old Gateway Bar). Great spot for UCC students!

I saw this pub when it opened a while ago. I looked inside and saw that it looked pretty sweet; bookshelves , comfy couches, a fire etc.
But my old housemate who works in gorby's told me it was an out and out gay bar?! I realise that this shouldnt have stopped me going, Im not mister homophobia or anything, but Id probably be more comfortable elsewhere if it was such a bar, which I have my doubts about.

That's fair enough if it would make you feel uncomfortable but it's definitely not a gay bar. I work there and if I thought it was so then I'd hand in my notice. As would 5 or 6 of my friends who work there. 3/4 gay people in a pub containing 20 doesn't make it a gay bar.

If you can prove me wrong, I'll give you free beer for the night!

Do you not think it's a bit harsh handing in your notice if it was a gay bar?

No I don't really. Like 'johnny-fatality' I wouldn't feel comfortable socialising in a gay bar, not to mind working in one. Bottom line is that An Réalt Dearg is not such a place. In fact, a large customer base are straight couples who go there for a few drinks together before town.

went there the other nihgt for a pint, its just as cool on the inside as it looks, well done on the atmosphere.
music was a tad loud but maybe thats becasue we were right beside a speaker,on the whole a pretty lovely place!

I'm not sure you've noticed but its 2009. I absolutely would not socialise in that pub now based soley on your comment. You're not doing much for business with bigoted comments like that

I really hate this type of PC bull. Love everybody , everybody should get along. Its utter crap to expect people to all conform to a vision of a eutopian society as set out by the EU. If someone doesn't want to work in a gay bar so what? Thats their choice, he's not proclaiming them evil.

Can I ask you a few questions: Have you ever lived in another country? Do you believe mixed culture communities work?

I never suggested that anyone was proclaiming anyone to be evil. I just personally do not feel there is any place for that sort of homophobia (which is what it is) in this day and age. Of course I'm not suggesting everyone live in a eutopian EU perfect world but I find it so difficult to understand why such discriminatory remarks are needed. Im not for one second suggesting a person isn't entitled to their opinion but is discrimination really neccessary? Please explain to me why you anyone would not work in a bar where gay people socialise? Someone please just answer that one question. (And no, im not gay myself, I just strongly disagree with discrimination in any form)

This has all gotten a bit off topic though. The pub looks lovely from the outside and I'm sure its just as nice inside (whether its full of straight, gay, bi, asian, black, american, blue, purple or multicoloured people - diversity makes the world go round:))

But you wont socialise in the pub because the barman is a homophope?

And anyway all the barstaff are GAA jocks who are frequently teethering on the edge of homosexuality. Maybe he's afraid he'll be tempted.
