I have 80GB pc which is 3.5 years old. Its currently running very slow and today I worked out its 70% full. Alot of it is probably photos and music which I don't want to loose. Would an external hard drive suit and then move the photos to this, and free up space on the pc?

Why not just buy an internal, they're cheaper and less chance of getting knocked around. Chances are a 3.5 yr old pc has sata ports which means You could move the hd to your next pc in time

Edit, silly me, just realised it could be a laptop, prob is with just 80GB and 3.5 yrs old, disregard

An external hard drive would work fine but it makes it more difficult to access pictures when you want them. Especially music......you would need the external harddrive connected every time you wanted to play a song.

May I suggest you run the following steps first:

1 - Go to Control Panel - Add remove Programs (or uninstall programs for vista) and sort programs by their size by clicking on the tab at the top). Remove any ones you feel you don't need.

2- Go to start - Programs - Accessories - System tools - Disk clean up.
Delete all these files ans they are just wasting disk space.

If you are wondering what is taking up the majority of space you can see it with this really cool utility http://windirstat.info/

I've done the disk clean up and defrag too so its fairly clean at the moment. whats a "sata port" - would that be what you'd plug the internal into.

other question : what size drive would I go for - is it possible that you could put too much in (ie putting a 2lt engine into a mini )

Nah, you can never have enough space. Go for as big as you want to pay for.

Is it a laptop, if it is You'll be looking for an external. If its a pc then give us the manufacturer and model no.
