I seen the 100 top comedians on E4 last week and seen that Billy Connelly was number 1 on the chart, although he's good I didn't think he would be number 1..

Who are people's top stand up comedians

    My top 5 would be:
    1. Lee Evans
    2. Tommy Tiernan
    3. Dara O Briain
    4. Chris Rock
    5. Peter Kay

    1 Dave Chappelle
    2 Dara O'Briain
    3 Ricky Gervais
    4 Eddie Izzard
    5 Mitch Hedberg (RIP)

Sorry, but I don't agree with any of those! Too shouty and obvious for my liking (jesus, that makes me sound like a right c*nt! Sorry!).

My two to add would be Stewart Lee and Doug Stanhope. (And Bill Hicks, though he's dead.........aw....)

Oh, forgot about Stanhope. Put him on my list instead of me!

And G-whizz, why would anyone WANT to liven up a funeral? And if indeed enlivenment was required, it's not an easy task for anyone. It's like saying 'he couldnt organise a piss-up in a rehab clinic'.

I just found a website which is compiling a list of the top 100 stand up comedians. Seems incredibly American biased, David O'Doherty is the only Irish act I can spot on the list. Anyone want to indulge in the old popular Irish past-time of poll rigging?

i love the fact that that poll is greatest stand ups of 2009 and the top 5 is

    Richard Pryor
    Steve Martin
    Johnny Carson
    Bill Cosby
    George Carlin

because they all had/are having prosperous stand up careers in 09

Some of the choices on that list are bizarre, Woody Allen? has he even done a standup show in the past 20 years? and Adam Sandler is on there but Mitch Hedberg isnt? bollocks!

anyway I'd have (past and present)

    1.Bill Hicks
    2.George Carlin
    3.Mitch Hedberg
    4.Chirstopher Titus
    5.Richard Pryor

    Ricky Gervais
    Bill Bailey
    Dara O'Brian

And the rest to me are all the same! Oh and Tommy Tiernan isnt funny.

    The analogy is half-apt.
A piss up would indeed be inappropriate at a rehab clinic.
Elicitation of a laugh would also be inappropriate at a funeral.
    These are similar.

A piss up however would be easy to arrange in a rehab clinic.
A laugh would not be easy to elicit at a funeral.
    These are dissimilar.

    Some of my favourites FWIW:
    Stewart Lee
    Ricky Gervais
    Rich Hall
    Steven Wright
    Bill Bailey

Shoutiness is, generally speaking, inversely proportional to funniness alright.
Examples i can think of would be Tommy "shouty" Tiernan and Jonny "unfunny" Vegas.

Don't mind Peter Kay though from that list and Chris Rock isn't the worst tbh.

Nice to see Louis CK get some props here, balances out nicely the view that Dara O Brian is one of the top 3 or 5 stand ups of all time lol.

This seems to be the 'name-drop your favourite dead comic' thread.

Not really theres been George Carlin, Bill Hicks, Lenny Bruce, Sam Kinison, Richard Pryor, Mitch Hederg and Dave Allen were the only dead comic's mentioned and at least one of them usually makes someones top comedians list not because they're dead but because they were good.

Tommy Tiernan is poor IMO. I haven't really watched that much Lee Evans, the look of him and his voice put me off.

    My top 5 would be:

    1. Frankie Boyle
    2. Billy Connolly
    3. Jimmy Carr
    4. Dara O'Brian
    5. Gervais/Kay ??
