    Hey there!
The gf has had ridicilous trouble with the axel in her car. She bought the car from a garage & 6k miles later the left one went. The garage told us that if they made up a bushing and fitted it it would NEVER again go. €600 and 1 week without the car later she had it back driving perfect. Pass on another 6k miles and lone behold the cars right side axel went and again same story but because we had been told (but not written on receipt ) that both had been fixed they done it for €400 and 1 week later car back good as new again. Now fast forward 4k miles and she told me her car is acting the same way. I went to a different local garage and he told me that it felt like the axel but he only does genuine Pug one rather than making up bush for it. So off I trotted to the garage again saying it felt like the axel but ye told me it would never again go blah blah. Week later told it was the front wishbone gone, 250 euro to fix it and DEFINATELY not the axel. This was about 1 mth ago and the car is getting worse daily. I am fairly certain that it is the axel but is there anyway I can tie them to fixing it properly? They have robbed her blind with this car and she doesnt exactly have the bucks or time to be dealing with this. The garage is defo a bunch of cowboys which we should have known from day one - told us 1 previous owner when in reality had 5!! etc but 18 mths on is probably a bit too late to bicker over this.
Really appreciate any help on this one!
    Thanks all

First the 206 only has one axle on the car, and that's on the rear. It's a trailing arm arrangement of a similar design to the 106, 205, 206, 309, 306, 405 and similar Citroen Models.

There was a problem with the 405 back axle swinging arm bushing wearing after high mileage/heavy loads and this resulted in the top of the wheel "falling in" (can't remember if the term is castor or camber, I think it's camber). The result was poor handling and uneven tyre wear. My Citroen AX GT had the same problem, but that was from the hammering it took.

As for the front, it's a basic McPherson Strut arrangement, with a wishbone at the bottom and an anti-roll bar linking the two wishbones/struts. The bushings in the wishbones do wear, but it's about 20 minutes to change a whole wishbone.

I'd take the car to a different mechanic (a proper one) and get him/her to look at it very carefully and explain the story to him. I'd be worried about what bodge was done, and what else is wrong with the car.

If you're in Cork, I can recommend a few excellent Peugeot/Citroen mechanics

In cork alright but after already spending 1000+ on it I dont want to have to turn around and put in a new axel which I know will be ridicilously expensive per side!!! Would I be able to get main dealer to check it out and say they didnt do a proper job and make them pay or are we basically stuck forking out either way?

As I said, the whole car has only ONE axle, in the rear. Bend down and look under the rear of the car, you'll see the axle tube forward of the spare wheel, running the width of the car.

The whole axle would not have to be changed, assuming that it isn't bent or anything. It's a fairly tough & robust unit. The front however, likes to eat wishbone bushes.....

Is the trouble with the front or rear?

Do you want the names of a few good Peugeot/Citroen mechanics in Cork City?

I imagine that after spending that much money, fairly everything under the car must be new....

I had this problem in an old 405 that I owned years ago. I had to replace the axle. NO amount of bushings will fix. There is a fix that is done to some axles when they are new(ish), which was to drill a hole in the hubs and fit a grease nipple on each side. Any time the car was serviced, the axle was greased and the wearing parts didn't wear as fast.
I had something like 130k on the clock of my 405 when I replaced the axle with a pre-drilled axle (which came out of a car with 154k on the clock). The car was transformed, for the better and kept going for the better part of 200k. Anyway, it sounds to me like you were ripped off. Bushings will not fix the sagging issue with the axle. As suggested before, get to a proper mechanic. I know the garage that did the work for me years ago (in west Cork) and he specialised in Peugeot cars - hence the grease nipple fix. He might be the man to speak to, or at lease he will put you right.
Assholes taking money for not doing the correct work just gives the already Fu*ked industry a bad name.
PM me if you need his details.
    Good luck.

I know there is one axel in the rear but the problem is the bushing unit on either side. They done the fix as mentioned above - made a brass bush with grease nipple "guranteed it will never go again" but guess what... it looks like it has. If ye can send on the details of them mechanics will try ring and see the price. Could well end up being a scrap yard car at this stage. only worth about 3500 and over 1 put into it already so prob not worth d money :(

I got the car a once over in 2 garages, non main dealer, and didnt mention a fault and they both came back saying was grand out. I still feel there is something wrong somewhere but would I be ok to sell it as an ok car when I have been told it by now 3 garages that the car is fine? If they ask anything just say axel was done and leave it at that and am I in the clear?

I could indeed do with a recommendation for a good Citroen mechanic in Cork...
