Dictation

I do a lot of my own typing, but often I would need to have large amounts of dictated speech transcribed by someone else.

Just wondering does anyone outsource their dictation needs to a service on the internet -
Who would you recommend and what are the costs?

    Thanks.

I don't know about online services but there are dozens of Business Centres around the city offering great rates on secretarial services. I'm sure google or the goldenpages will help you find one close to home/work. The benefit of using a Business Centre over online services is that you get to call in and meet the people who provide the service and they could courier printed items to you same day if necessary. It would also be possible for them to provide you with a cd or emailed digital copy of anything typed out.

Google Virtual Assitants and you should find a VA who can provide the service - most of them work from home and provide competitive prices

yea I know some in the medical profession outsource it to India. They just upload the wav file and a document/filled form or image file comes back.

kinda speclised but I'm it must be cheaper than employing a local secretary

It's probably not exactly what you're looking for, and you may have already looked into it, but have you considered using voice dictation software?

    Something like:
    http://www.nuance.com/naturallyspeaking
It has a built-in feature that allows you to record a wav file and then transcribe its contents into text.

Windows Vista also comes with voice dictation software, although I'm not sure how good it is.

I tried the voice recognition stuff but I lacked the patience to train it sufficiently for it to be accurate enough...

Thanks for all of the pointers - ended up going for a local secretary for my typing.

    Regards

I know that a lot of executives use dictation. I can't imagine using it myself. Does it really save time? Would it be suited to writing sales copy?

If you're a very fast typist, perhaps not. If you're a mediocre typer like me, it probably works out just as fast.

The largest stenography company in Ireland, they are court reporters, shorthand on a machine, they also do transcription of audio tapes etc. I used to deal with them a lot, very professional, very quick turn around of material.

I run a secretarial/transcription service from home. Mainly do legal stuff for solicitors/barristers as I worked for 20 years as a legal secretary. If transcription is on tapes I cant do that as this method is outdated now and not many using this anymore. If its dictation that you could email to me, I can do that.... fee: a very competitive €15 per hour . My typing speed in approx 80pm. Could be slower or faster depending on how clear dictation is. If your interested email me on jrlegalservices@hotmail.com.
