Can anyone shed any light on the following. I have completed training for assessing new & existing houses and there is an exam at the end of the course run by the course organisers (costing €645). I know to register as an assessor you must complete the SEI exam but do I need to do the exam run by my training course providers first?

    Thanks,

yes, you need to pass the trainers exam before you can register with SEI

€645... is that the cost of the whole training course... or an extra cost for the exam??

That's exam only. The course was €1,125 for three days plus an introductory day that I think was €100 or so. The course was back in February and the exam was finally announced for next week - a big gap that makes the refresher courses at €430 each very tempting.

It looks to me like the exam is pretty tough too. They're allowing 1.5 hours to complete a new-build DEAP assessment of a simple dwelling, from drawings and specifications, including the calculation of some U values and logging it on the Training NAS and producing an Advisory Report. and I hour to assess an existing dwelling, excluding survey but including logging it on the Training NAS and producing an Advisory Report.

Even for simple dwellings this seems a tall order when you need to achieve 70% to pass. Was it always that hard?

Are they still training people for BER? Thats the same as the course I did except it was a 5 day course and the exams were all on the Friday afternoon. We had the set exercises, short questions, the new dwelling assessment and the rating improvement exercise to complete in one afternoon. I don't know how anyone would have trouble with it for time. I certainly wouldn't be paying for a refresher course considering the amount of money that is to be made when the exam is completed. If I had known then what I know now I wouldnt have paid the SEI fee to register and throw good money after bad.
