Fuse on starter solinoid

I'm thinking of moving my battery from the engine bay to the boot, the reason's are that 1) the engine bay is quite cluttered and Halford batteries do nothing for street cred 2)bring some of the weight to the back 3) because I can.

Currently the car has no fuse from the starter solenoid to the battery, however when I run the cable all the way though the car I'll want some protection on that line.

I bought a 100A circuit breaker, which I though would be enough, but now I read that the starter will take more than 100amps (+1200watts!)and that is why there was no fuse in the first place. Is this correct?

They're normally not fused, presumably for the reason that you've outlined. Some cars have their batteries away from the engine bay with the Mini being the best example that I can think of off the top of my head - it might be worth looking at the precautions that BL took to prevent spontaneous combustion as Mini's aren't noted for electrical fires in general.

Many BMWs and Mercedes have the battery in the boot. My (front engined) 928 has it in the boot too.

Hmm, and the jag has it too, maybe a fusable link?

Hmmm, seems that if the battery has the capacity of 500CCA (cranking amps) then logically I would need a 500amp fuse, which you can't get. The cars I've looked at just seem to have a unfused starter line. I suppose my option would be to mount the solenoid near the battery and fuse the rest.

If you got a fuse big enough to take the current, and god forbid something shorted, the car would be on fire anyway before it blows!

If you reduce the amp of it you'll blow the fuse the first time you start the car!

I think it a bit pointless to fuse.

You're right, I'd be able to deliver about 6KW before any fuse blew! Guess I'll just have to be careful.
