Mini-pumps and high PSI tyres...

Is it just me or are the small, portable pumps next to useless on racing-type tyres (>100psi)?

It takes a fair bit of pressure even with a big Joe Blow track pump. I'm just wondering about replacing and inflating tubes 'on the go'

Try to find mini pumps with switch that changes from fast inflation mode to high-pressure mode. You can get up to 150psi with them, but painfully slowly. Or you can get some co2 capsules, work great!

You don't need 100+ PSI to get home.

You'd have a hard time getting over 100psi in to tyres using any mini-pump I've ever tried.

I'd only really use them to get me home

True, but you may get the flat early on your spin, and doing 100+kms on 60-70psi would really make a difference.

    Check something like that:

I've been tempted to go Gas. Will a gas wotsit get up to over 100psi? Do they work as well on road as on mtb tires ?

Anyone recommend a particular one ? It would be nice to get a really tiny one that fits into the saddle bag

Mine get to me to about 120psi on each cylinder.

I have a cheap BBB one that works with threaded cylinders and is small and cool, and a not quite so small one that works with non-threaded cylinders. They're all similar really, so go for any of them!

Unless you are very heavy 60 to 70 psi should be enough to get you home but be extra careful not to get a pinch flat on potholes or rough surface. You can get mini floor pumps with frame attachments which are better as you can use your weight to increase the pressure. The CO2 cartridges may be the way to go but some people find them difficult to use allowing the gas to escape.

    I bought this a while ago http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=28986

The first time i used it was a total failure, i haven't plugged it properly to the valve and all the gas went away. Second try was fine, the tube inflated in a matter of seconds at 120psi, maybe more.

My mini-lidl one has a hi-volume / hi- Pressure switch at the bottom and it can get up to 80ish which is fine to get you to a bikeshop/home/somewhere else with a pump. Cheap Cheap.

I get it as the pressure as high as I can with the pump, and I also have one of these
1_672.jpg which can get it topped up in the garage - there's plenty of them around.
